Far side of the.....???

Post by northeasternparrothead »

after a couple listens to the live auburn cd, and a recording off radio maragaritaville of "Far Side of the World," i noticed the JB basically skips over the middle section of the song. perhaps i'd just never noticed it before, but any idea why he totally skips it?

I was destined for this vantage point
Which is so far from the Sea
I've lived it in the pages of Saint-Exupery

From Paris to Tunisia
Casablanca to Dakar
I was riding long before I flew
Through the wind and sand and stars.

and

A Sunset framed by lightening bolts
Burns a lasting memory
And a string of tiny twinkling lights
adorn the sausage tree.
While the embers from the log fire
Flicker, fly, and twirl
Then drift off toward the cosmos
From the Far Side of the World.

seems to be pretty important verses to me :D is this like JB to just SKIP over lines?
I've got to fly to Saint Somewhere.....

He also skips a big verse in Jolly Mon on the Vegas cd. I just chalk it up to senior moments. He tends to have a lot of them. He also misses a whole verse in This Hotel Room. If you listen to Hotel Room you hear him go 'uh' just before one of the verses. I think this is where he lost it.
At least on that song. :pirate:

I think he cut that verse out of the live FSOTW performances because of time and not due to a senior moment. When they did it on the Tonight Show, they had to shorten it, and they seem to have left it short for all the live performances since then.

My sense is CS is correct...

the structure of the song on CD is:

Verse 1
Verse 2
CHORUS
Verse 3
Verse 4
CHORUS
Verse 5
Verse 6
Verse 7
CHORUS
Verse 8
CHORUS

Based on what you're saying, live it would be:

Verse 1
Verse 2
CHORUS
Verse 3
CHORUS
Verse 7
CHORUS
Verse 8
CHORUS

Aesthetically this probably works better live (might have worked better on the record too actually...) If you do a double verse at the top of the song, you generally don't do it again in the second verse - emotionally people want the payoff - the chorus.

Consider that live a 6 minute song would seem to go on FOREVER and I suspect the edits are to keep the song flowing and the show moving....

At the shows in February of this year, he sang all the verses; the complete song. Don't get me wrong, I love this song, but it seemed no one was singing by the end. People used this song for bathroom breaks and such as that. Maybe he got the same vibe and decided to shorten it for future shows. Just my opinion.

are you kidding me, this is the best song he has written in 15 years! This is the song I most look forward to at concerts these days!

FSOTW is a great song!! Definitely one of the best in recent years. I don't think he shortened it due to a lack of interest. It's more likely about the flow of the show, like Lee said!

:-? I didn't say I went to the bathroom during the song; it is also one of my all time favorites!!! I was singing right along. I was just offering an opinion as to why the song was shortened. Geesh....
