The Parrothead’s Guide to the Florida Keys and Key West

One of my parrothead dreams is finally coming true! The wife and I are finally going to Key West in January. Here’s my idea. I have some thoughts about what to do and see in Key West, but never having been, I feel I’m at a disadvantage. I figured I could call on the multitude of Key West knowledge from my fellow parrotheads to help me. Could everyone please post suggestions on places to stop on the way to Key West, as well as things to do while there? To get things started, I will give a list of some hot spots I’ve collected thus far. Thanks for everyone’s input!

Margaritaville (of course)
Captain Tony’s
Sloppy Joe’s
Hog’s Breath
Turtle Kraals
The Chart Room
Southern Most Point
Mallory Square
Jimmy Buffett's first house in Key West
Shrimp Boat Sound Studio
The Hemmingway House
Pepe's
Trails of Margaritaville – The Ultimate Parrothead Tour
Conch Tour Tram

If you're into raunchy humor and dirty jokes, "Irish Kevin's" is a must! It's just up from Sloppy Joes... Definately my favorite bar in Key West.

If the weather is good enough,
check out Blue Heaven for brunch.

St. S, I agree with your list and the above suggestions..... I would add half shell raw bar to the list of restaurants and at least cocktails on the afterdeck at Louie's Backyard or for an fantastic dinner. The top of the LaConcha Hotel for a cocktail and a great view of sunset and KW from a few stories up. Most of the bars listed have excellent afternoon entertainment not just after dark.

To get all this done hope your spending a few weeks.

I don't know if you're flying or driving.....we drove. On the way, we stopped at Pennekamp State Park and went snorkeling. For a novice at this type o thing, it was AWESOME!

Not funny!!!

But it is a nice way to get around the rock on your own, that or bicycles...

Make sure to lock either up, when you park!

Schooner Wharf Bar. It is right near Shrimpboat Sound on the Harbor Boardwalk.

All excellent suggestions by the previous posters. Also, check out B.O.'s Fishwagon where Jimmy and the session people lunch often. Across the street is Pepe's great happy hour, another J.B.haunt, his picture is on the wall. Now here's an obscure one for you , the "Bottle Cap" a real down home local bar that has patron's that hung out and ran with "Buff" back in the old days of the Key West Boogie. Directly across theside street is a new bar that used to be the "Full Moon Saloon" where Phil Clark's ashes wre stored behind the bar , and Chris Robinson J.B.'s best friend was the bartender. Phil Clark was the original piraye looking at forty. As always, G.M.,Jr.

All of my suggestions have already been mentioned (although I'm surprised nobody said Louie's Backyard).

1. Schooner Wharf
2. Green Parrot (best place for music)
3. Pepe's (Pepe's rocks. It's about all I can do to not eat every meal there).

If you are driving down- highly recommended (the drive alone is worth it- best taste of the keys) you should stop at Islamorada for a rummrunner. Tiki Bar.

My better half and I are heading down with my son and his fiancee' the week of New Year's and appreciate all the suggestions in this thread. The wife and I had three days there earlier (following JB in Miami) and were able to experience quite a few of the establishments and agree with all the assessments plus look forward to hitting those we missed (too many drinks, not enough time). Looking forward to a whole week there and escaping these vicious south Louisiana winters. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Just have your money ready to cross the bridge, and be aware that the Elephant Steps make your car rock n roll like Mick Jagger on a three-day Viagra bender. Just before Card Sound Bridge, on your right, is Alabama Jack's. All types congregate there. I've seen the pictures of Cathy Lee Gifford singing there. It's a great part of the trip and not to be missed.

I'm turning left at the east end of Card Sound Rd. the first weekend in March. Got a big party to go to. :D
