I'm in line with the "don't knock on the door". Just because you're on vacation doesn't mean everyone else is. The sign on the door should have been enough providing everyone reads and understands English. Translated, Authorized Personnel Only" means "Don't F#*@" with me".
I get alot of tourists stopping by the seaplane base to check out the pictures on the wall and taking in the salt air and maybe catching a picture of a plane coming out of the water, and I don't mind it. However, if the door is shut and locked, don't knock. Probably means I am too busy or too tired to engage in idle chat about the company and such.
It's like the age old saying "When in Rome"....unless you saw any locals go knocking (who can read a sign) don't go knocking yourself.
Scolding is over, nothing personal, but I think you got the reaction you both earned and deserved.

Sorry you had a rude encounter, but I think everyone has pretty much given you the right answers here.
I am an engineer at a large studio in Atlanta, and we will give tours if an appointment is set up, but even then you would not be able to go into any of the studios where a session is in progress. We try not to be rude to any walk-up curious people, but luckily we are big enough to have a receptionist to handle those folks. If the assistant engineer had to leave a session in order to answer the door, and it ended up being someone who just wanted a tour, I could see how he might be p*** off, although the degree of politeness or lack thereof would certainly vary for each person.
And I am not a frustrated musician, I just happen to have found my niche - but I do actually s*** at several different instruments...

I agree, ccmatt. No one puts up a sign like that for kicks. And responding to interruptions (like a knock at the door) can ruin anyone's afternoon, whether you're cleaning tiolets or cleaning up backing vocal tracks.ccmatt wrote:Take my word for it , the guy that answered the door was just doing his job. The sign authorized personal isn't up there for decoration. And contrary to some posts, there are very few knocks on the door there.
If it was an office with a receptionist responding to callers, then you'd be (somewhat) justified in taking offense at the (allegedly*) rude treatment.
*I apologize for my incredulity, but in a written record like the one you posted here, it's hard to see the rudeness. Did he use any uncouth language or gestures? did he slam the door while you were talking?
It doesn't matter, and I'm sorry I asked for details. It's just food for thought.
Cut the guy a break this time and hope that you meet again under more pleasant circumstances.
Meanwhile, lemme buy the next round. Hurricanes, anybody?

Brave Dave, You're right on. I know most of the guys in the studio and they are in no way inherently rude. Also, they very much appreciate parrotheads and the fact their support is the reason they all have good jobs in a resort area. And as I said, most people respect the sign and they actually don't get bothered very often. Let's all have a Hurricane and forget the whole thing.

Recording studio blues
Most of the people I've met in the recording studios have at least acknowledged that they don't hold jobs in a place everyone is familiar with - I mean, they're not selling insurance (no offense to any insurance sellers here). So it's only natural to be curious, but curiosity has its limits.
I used to work as a session player at Sun Studio in Memphis and the interruption of tourists on recording sessions was very common. The recording studio was in operation after the gift shop/museum had closed. At the time (not sure about now), the gift shop closed early, around 5 or 6 pm. So those who came in the evening, hoping to see where Elvis got his recording start, would circle the building, looking for any door on which to knock. It wasn't really disturbing until one couple sat outside the exit door until after midnight, and then try to get in while the engineers and musicians were leaving. Sometimes, I miss those days....

True, many/most locals are NOT Buffett fans! At least that was the case in 1994-1996. It's still a great island though....getting just a bit overpopulated... How does that song go? "..they tore down Paradise to put up a parking lot..."Duff wrote:I've heard from some people that the locals in Cayo Hueso are getting sick of the Parrotheads, so you probably just had the misfortune of one local taking his indifference out on you. It's a shame because it ruins the picture most of us have drawn of the great island.
