I think the timing of his announcement coincides with the release of the book, which is probably something his publisher arranged.
He does seem like a very messed up individual though.

ESPN said rose has 2 more years of eligiblity but that was before yesterday's inductee class was announced.... after that only the veteran's comittee could vote him in, but ESPN said hell would freeze over first before they allowed that.
for the record ESPN reported shoeless joe jackson is still banned from baseball. i guess his lifetime ban also includes deadtime...
