Ok-He has said he has been wanting to do a country style cd for a while now. It seems he was saying this before 5 0'clock... came out. How does anyone know that the song License to Chill is a rip off of 5 O'clock? Nobody know when this song was written. It may have been written long before 5 O'clock was became a hit. Personally I like the song and think the rap at the end is sorta amusing. No different than other raps Jimmy has done in the past. If you think back you will notice he talks at the end of Ragtop Day. He has been doing this for a long time. I am really looking forward to this cd and the upcoming tour. It will be interesting to see if Mac does a lot more singing on the next tour. If Jimmy is doing a lot of duets on the new cd someone will have to sing the non-Jimmy part.
To sum it all up-I don't think we should pass judgement on the new cd, or Jimmy's song writing abilities until we hear the new cd in full.
Just my opinion.

Phin

I can understand everyones point of view. But I liked LTC the first time I heard it. I dont think its a rip off of 5 o'clock, just has some similiaritys in the style and message being conveyed. As a musician, I feel that the versus and the chorus are a lot different from 5 o'clock. Only thing that bugs me is watching Kenny sing in any video.

Not sure it's a deliberate rip-off but lyrically and thematically it seems like territory already covered in 5 O'Clock... work sucks, need to escape etc...
If Jimmy wants to avoid the impression that he's just riding AJ's coattails into country mainstream, he probably should have lead with something different. But maybe he doesn't care what people think.
Like I said, I've heard the record is amazing. I just think "License To Chill" is a weak song that regurgitates the 5'Oclock theme.

I like the song, it reminds me a a 'Riddles in the Sand' type song although I don't really care for the talking at the end of the song.
But then again I don't care for the ranting at the beginning of 'Fruitcakes' but still love that song.
To say this song is a rip off of "it's five o clock somewhere" is wrong.
It sounds nothing like it to me, maybe that's because I play guitar though.
A lot of Jimmy's songs sound similar anyway or have the same subjects (ie-boats,beaches,bars,drinking,etc) so who cares?
I for one can't get enough songs about the "jerk" boss, girls, islands, beer, etc.
For the record, I bought that Brent Burns cd and it sounds like karaoke (ie drum machines and fake steel drums).

My 2 cents now: I don't care if he get's radio play, I don't care if high school girls start buying tickets to his concerts just because of Kenny Chesney or whatever. I happen to like the song (except the "whiteman's rap") It sounds good and in my opinion, and my friends who have heard it, they all like it. Sure it may sound a little like 5 o'clock but for the longest time some Doobie Brothers songs sounded the same to me before I really listened to them (same sort of guitar i guess)
I do agree he should expand who he sings with other artists like andrewsjerrypat mentioned. ALSO while i'm thinking about it, how do we know that this song wasn't written and recorded before 5 o'clock somewhere? Maybe 5 o'clock is a ripoff of THIS song! I doubt it but hey, we don't know the facts.

Not sure exactly when it was written, but it was recorded in the past two months.
And while I suppose it's conceivable possible that the guys who wrote 5 O'Clock Somewhere may have heard an unreleased and unrecorded McAnally song, methinks the chances are slim. So we can probably rule out that it inspired 5 O'Clock.

My 2 cents. I was on the fence about the song after hearing it on RM, but I have to say that after hearing it live and seeing the video last night in Anaheim...I like it. The song is catchy, and the video of two great musicians having fun is contagious. I don't consider this a rip-off of "5 o'clock" in the least bit because of the fact this is Jimmy's song. He was no more than a guest on "5 o'clock". As for the theme...please...country has about three main themes...My wife/husband left me..I lost my job...my dog died.

For those who believe this to be the beginning of the end...I have three words for you...Don't buy it! Jimmy is not going to miss your money. Others will pick up the slack!

Face it, It wouldn't be a Jimmy Buffett album if there wasn't the usual corny intro's or endings. Me, I love them! Think about it, there hilarious to listen too. I've been listening to Scarlet Begonia for a while and think it's an awesome song. Also, Jimmy is finally getting the rewards he always sais he never has gotten. Its awesome! I can't wait for the cd to come out. As usual, I'll be at the Waly World at 6:30 before school starts. Keep jamin Jimmy!

I think this next CD may become a HUGH hit. I have liked all 3 songs I have heard. LTC is an typical summer themed corny Buffett song. Scarlet Begonia has a great catchy tune that could soneday be a show opener. The song he closed with last night, I don't think RM broadcast it, "Anything, Anytime, Anyway" sounded like a tribute to us PH's. I wish I could have caught more of the lyrics, but by the end of another Parrothead Holiday...hearing was a strain

i just want to say that i am not going to pass judgement before i hear the whole thing. remember what happened last time jimmy 'ventured out?'
yes my friends, it was a little album called "beach house on the moon." while there are a few really good songs on there, the album had a lot of cheese in it.
the album will most probably be a hit because of his recent success. a lot of buffett virgins will be buying this album

I am glad that Goodman had the courage to start this thread. Thank you!
From the moment I first heard this and saw the video in California, I felt embarrassed. I agree with most of what has been said here, and applaud what Key Lime Lee has said... that also took courage and insight.
My $.02 cents worth is just this: Jimmy has always tried to make it in country and failed. This is just my opinion, and only my opinion, BUT I think his ego has become involved by trying to proove something.
All the many times we have heard him say, "I've never gotten a single award... no radio time.... Etc.... BUT, it doesn't matter to me... it's my fans, etc." speech.
My gender is female, so I look at everything emotionally... professionally; I am a social worker who looks beyond words and watches actions.
I have never met the man, so how can I judge him and I certainly do not read minds. But, my woman's intuition tells me that he DOES care that he hasn't been recognized and played so he is attempting it once again.
I am also a musician and a writer.... The lyrics weren't just silly--they were juvenile and amateurish.
I predict that this song will go no where and that it will p*** off a many PH that do not want to see him go mainline country.
I have stood by him since 1975, BUT, I will NEVER trade in my hula skirt for cowboy boots. never!!!

Well I am a big Country music fan as well as a Parrothead and without having heard the song, my thoughts are this.
I am fans of Toby, Alan, Kenny and George: All talented artists in their own right. Everyone at some point is always looking for something different to do and I think maybe it's the artists cashing in on Jimmy and not the other way around.
Alan saw "5'Oclock as something JImmy would do and I think the other artists who no doubt admire and respect Jimmy, saw its success and think maybe they could get something from hooking up with Jimmy.
Regardless of what Jimmy says everyone wants recognition for the work they do and country is part of who he is, coming from the South. Remember "Great Filling STation Hold Up?"

That was one of his funniest songs and it was very country.
Maybe Jimmy's just getting back to his roots in his own unique way!
JMHO!

I have no problem with Jimmy doing country or recording with other artists. I would just like it to be good, which I don't think "LTC" is (the song; I haven't heard the rest of the CD or seen the video).
Like some have said, lyrically and musically it sounds very amateurish. I know Jimmy isn't infallible and I know that not every song of his is going to be great or even good. He's human and we all do good work and not so good. But if I were Jimmy, I think I would have kept this in my file of "songs no one else will ever hear". I certainly would not have made it my title song. (BTW, I think "Conchy Tonk" was a so much more clever title.)
After all my incessant talking of JB to my non-PH friends, I feel embarrassed for them to hear this song. It's not representative of what Jimmy can do. When I heard it (I've only heard it once) I also thought, "Isn't this a watered down version of 5 O'Clock?!" It doesn't matter to me which came first. Compared to 5 O'Clock, it just doesn't rate, and I wouldn't have released it.
I was about to say, "But I'll probably buy the CD anyway." But you know what - I won't. First, I'll only spend my $ on things I enjoy. Second, I think it would be a wrong message to send to Jimmy or any artist to buy their music just because it's them. If I like other songs on the CD (and I hope I will), then I'll buy it.
Sorry this is so long.
