Even though I'm pretty low on the totem pole here, I'd like to give my opinion. I've only known who Jimmy Buffett WAS for five or six years now. I've only become a parrothead in the past two years (though not nearly as big as some). I've known coming into this that Jimmy was a busninessman. So maybe that skews my opinion on things a little bit, but when I see something that I think is just a moneymaker, I don't spend money on it. I spend my money on something that I find to be of substance. I for one, loved A Pirate Looks at 50 but don't care for his fiction. So I don't buy his fictional books. We are the consumers. If you don't like something, don't buy it. But only a rash person makes a judgement off of a person's whole career by judging a few recent decisions. There's a lot of history to be accounted for.

Well, one thing is for sure. Opinions are like a-holes.....everybody's got one and we all think that everybody else's stinks. There have been some very good points brought up about Jimmy. Sadly, a lot of them are true. I guess what it all boils down to is this: Do we "worship" the man or the lifestyle that he personifies?? If you do the latter, then it really doesn't matter what Jimmy does now or in the future. The sun will always shine in Margaritaville and the boat drinks will always be too frutiful even after-perish the thought- Jimmy is gone. I think that being a parrothead is just like being a good friend---- You stick with 'em even if you don't like everything they do.

Mike
I waited all day long to read what others had to say and I must say this is GOOD reading!! I really like what Mike said here.....
Very insightful.... very true...
The one thing that I have come to realize is that I am "old school Buffett".... the storytellling and the word paintings took me to different shores..... Now it seems that the escapism that I loved about him is being replaced by Margaritas, and rum. Nothing bad with that, but it was his story telling and poetry that gave me the relief that I needed....
His "call doctor Phil" is not poetry... it is a 3rd grade rhyme..
(again just my own opinion and does not reflect the opinion of this station)

I agree.
These guys must all be from Philly. In Philly, you can hit home runs all day long and they think you're great but strike out once and they're calling for your head.
Look, folks, you're right. It's not his best but what the Hell? In a thirty plus year career and a couple of dozen albums, there's going to be a dud sooner or later.
The guy's given us all a lot of enjoyment for a long time. Let's cut him a little slack, huh?

(and WHY are there so many freakin threads on this
)
This is America, capitalism, etc... HELLO
EVERY starving artist has dreams of making it, having throngs of loyal fans, having a website & a place to shop within it
So what? I'm envious, not jealous, he works hard, makes alot of $
so does Donald Trump. People are quick to find fault in successful people who have made it.
They made it because
They Made it happen..
I'm not the biggest fan of the song but so what
...don't make me come out of the virtual tailgate again

photogal wrote:hey, I'm new cause I never had the nerve to talk on one of these, I always read them and yes I live in Mass without many country stations. I dont like the severe country with the people with the twangs if you know what I mean. Alan Jackson has one. I thought 5 oclock was a cute novelity and that was all well and good but more of the same will be doing it to death. I dont like some of Jimmys very early stuff either, kinda pick and choose. I do like Mac and Jerry Jeff and you could say they are country but to me its different.
What you call "severe country" is what I call real country, not the watered down version that clogs our airwaves today. Give me Hank Williams, Sr., Waylon, Willie, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris or George Jones over ANY of today's "country" music stars. Country has been an influence on Buffett's music since the very beginning. I have an old Time magazine article from the early 70s that refers to his music as "Carribean Country", "Cuban Crime of Passion" is fine example of this. I'm one of the people that consider his early work his best but that doesn't mean I ever stopped buying his albums and License to Chill will be no exception. I haven't heard the song in question but agree that I should hear the entire album before weighing in on the subject. I'll be there on release day just like I have been for all of his other albums, whether I will like it or not remains to be seen.

Now that's not nice. We only boo because we care and we're very passionate people, who always seem to lose! It's almost not fair, cities like Baltimore and Tampa have won more titles then Philly in the past 21 years.
Oh, and regarding Buffett... I like the new song and can't wait for the album to come out.
These threads are all kind of funny since no one has heard the entire album yet. How can we judge the direction JB is going and the quality of the album, when (as I pressume) none of us have heard it.
Finally, for those who criticize the song because it isn't as "deep" and "insightful" as the older Buffett tunes, what would you say if songs like "CIP", "Pencil thin Mustache", "Franky and Lola", "Smart Woman" and even "Creola" were released today. These songs don't necessarily have the greatest lyrics and rhymes. And how about some of the songs JB wrote for FSOTW (i.e Tonight I just need my guitar, Someday I will and FSOTW) some of these songs are far more insightful then Jimmy's earlier stuff.
Just give the album a chance.

What else is this forum for if not to voice our opinions, regardless of how much you have to say? Talk as much as you want.
I haven't heard the song yet- I tried to download it the other night but it cut out on me- so I can't offer an opinion.
Is this the final cut of the song? Maybe the other songs are better, we don't know what the end result will be. Many of Jimmy's songs have the theme of "Work sucks, I want to get away to the islands."
On a lighter note, more then 10 years ago Alan Jackson wrote a song called "Gone Country" about how it was suddenly so cool to do country music. It looks now like the country music world has "Gone Jimmy".
Not just Alan's duet with Jimmy but Kenny Chesney's last two songs: "No shoes, no shirt no problems" and "All I want for Christmas is a real good tan". I think it's pretty funny.
Oh well, I'm optomistic that it will all turn out ok. I have to have something to look forward to after I had to miss the concert Saturday!
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you
