I'm always on the look out for new microbrews, but standards include
Sam Adams
Guiness
Boddingtons
Anchor Steam
Flying Dog
Red Brick
Dogwood
and the list goes on...
Charleston has a great microbrew called Palmetto but I can never find it in Georgia.

My standards are dropping fast.....
My favorite beer is whatever happens to be in the house when I'm done with the medication I'm taking!!!
Mr. SGH says no beer is worth drinking that can't be enjoyed at room temperature....

OOPS....forgot a couple other faves!! This summer when I visited Denver, friends of mine turned me on to Fat Tire Amber Ale and Sunshine Wheat beer. That New Belgium brewing co. in Fort Collins has got it going on! I wish I could buy it here
fortunately I can pick it up in St. Louis when I visit my family

...and...from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, CA...

Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "Lupus salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Re: favorite beer?
*BIG BUMP! I was gonna start a favorite beer thread but this is fine.
For years I've been a Coors Light/Michelob Light and even Natural Light guy but in recent months I'm finally branching out more and liking what I used to think I hated. Maybe my taste buds are changing.
Some of my new faves, new to me anyway are:
Shock Top
Shiner Bock
Yuengling
Yuengling Black and Tan
I even drank a Samuel Adams Winter beer the other night and liked it.
As for "island beer" I recently found Carib Lager from Trinidad and it's my favorite beer followed by Shock Top right now. I think Carib is 5.2 alcohol by volume.
These are not really "abstract" or that "out there" but to me it's a big deal considering what I usually drink. I guess these "new to me" beers have more alcohol because when I go back to my old standby beers they seem like water now. Even some of my faves like Miller Chill and Bud Light Lime seem really weak. I seem to down a bottle really quick now. Maybe that's a sign of how weak it is?
I still like my Michelob Amberbock though.
I guess I'm in the baby stages of becoming a beer snob, although I will drink anything that won't drink me first. I find myself standing in the beer aisle for a long time now, always wanting to try something different.
The biggest mistake I've made was trying MGD 64 Light because of my diet but it's super weak and blows. I'll have to make room in my diet for good beer. It's worth it.

Re: favorite beer?
SOB, give Sam Adams Light a try. If I didn't know it was a light beer I'm not sure I could tell. Not as full bodied as a Bass or a Shiner but not too different from a regular Sam lager, but I think every bit as good as a Yuengling (although with a different flavor). Got a nice amber color to it, too, unlike most lights.
Carib, yum. Reminds me of Anguilla, where Sam was something like $7 a bottle but Carib and Red Stripe were $3. When in Rome...!

Almost any beer "cept budwiser product or corona. Those give me headaches. Sol, Then Miller, then Lite. Any beer drank in Mexico right would be welcome.

Re: favorite beer?
lately I've been buying Newcastle for the house, and drinking Switchback when I'm out, but Friday I brought home a case of Corona and used it to make Sharkbites....I enjoyed them so much I had to go to the store this afternoon for more beer before the football games started.
