Savannah or Charleston?

Okay, need some opinions here dudes... The gf and i just got back from the Carolinas and our eventual move down there was complicated by the fact that we weren't overly stoked about Wilmington... SO.... Here's the deal:

We need to be south of Virginia (too cold) but north of Florida (been there, done that, don't wanna go back). We need to be on the coast or within a half hour of the coast and within' 20 minutes or so of a fairly large city.

We like Charleston, but have heard really good things about Savannah but have never been.... So... Whatta ya'll think?

Your Highness, (bowing before the Monkey King)

Charleston is very nice. Lots of Medical jobs I hear. Since you're in NYC the cost of living won't surprise you. I'm looking into moving by next year, hopefully to either Conway or Columbia, SC.

Nice bunch of PHC's there too...

In either one, just be prepared to be constantly referred to as a "Yankee", as the "War Of Northern Aggression" is still not over...

I stayed at a Hampton Inn off of I95 in Savannah one night....

It was nice, free breakfast and everything

I don't know from Charleston, but Savannah is one of the most enchanting cities I've ever visited. Stayed there for 2 weeks in a lovely guest house in the historic district about 3 years ago and fell slap in love.

Living there would be different from visiting, but I do love that city.

Savannah does a bang up job celebrating St. Patrick's day, btw... :D
I know in the past they even dyed the river green! 8)
(I don't know if the environmentalists have managed put a stop to that, though)

However... Charleston does have a Margaritaville Store...

Decisions, decisions!

What was it about Wilmington that you didn't care for? I ask b/c there are a lot of similarities the three cities you name.

Well, in the words of Stephanie, It looks just like Long Island! I actually liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately we didn't make it to the coast because of the idiots we went with.... Steph and I made a 1 day jaunt to Charleston and she liked the city a little better.. I think she's just looking for a city that at least has a couple tall buildings so she doesn't miss NYC too much...
We both felt that downtown Charleston had a Bostony kinda feel to it that we liked. We didn't really get any kind of a feel from Wilmington.

You might want to check out the Raleigh/Durham, NC area. It has a very southern feel, but also has tall buildings and a slightly more "city" feel.

Too far from the coast though... Ya see, I have this idea of having a boat docked on the inlet running through my backyard and I can just jump in and cruise out to open ocean....

Well.........let's see. I've lived in Virginia and N.C. all my life. Off the top of my head, I can't think of "coastal" town that's going to have the "tall buildings/metropolitan" feel to it.

Maybe you could rent a dock or buy a small piece of property for boat docking, and live a little farther inland? I lived in Charlotte, NC and highly recommend it. It's a beautiful, historic city, but downtown is all about big buildings and commerce. That would appeal to the girlfriend.

Just about anywhere in NC is in driving distance of beach for weekend trips.

Other than that, I'm out of suggestions.....I'll let you know if I think of anything else though! :D

We have a place in Hilton Head and I've been to both quite often. I would choose Charleston

I've had a great time in both places, and Savannah has made a huge turn-around in the past 10-15 years (used to be a very high crime/murder rate).

But I've spent alot more time in Charleston and can never get enough of the history nor the overall "feel" (not that Savannah doesn't have a ton of history to delve into). Savannah is an important seaport so there's a good bit more industry and business compared to Charleston. The only complaint I've heard about Charleston from those that have lived there is that the tour buses and carriages can be a problem in the spring and early summer.

Overall, I'd vote for Charleston. And like CS said, there's a Margaritaville too. Hope this helps. :D

That Margaritaville thing would have been good to know last Thursday... I had no idea! Is it just the store or a restaurant too?

The M'ville in Charleston is just the store. But they're opening the new one with a restaurant in Myrtle Beach in July, which isn't *too* far from Charleston.

Being a native to S.C., I guess I'm biased, but my vote is for Charleston. I have always lived in the Upstate, so I can't really say how it is to live down there, but I sure do love to visit. It's one of my favorite places to go. I love Savannah, too, but the only times I've really been there was for St. Patrick's Day, which isn't really a good time to see how the city really is. (If you've never been to Savannah for St. Patty's, you gotta go--what a blast!)

Charelston and Savannah are two of my favorite cities in the world. And no you will not find a tall building in coastal Carolina that isn't a church steeple. You could always go to Winston-Salem, they have an exact replica of the Empire State Building downtown. The architects buit it in advance to test out some design features. (If it didn't work, whats a few Carolinians)

IMHO. you wouldn't go wrong either way. Charleston is very military, ie very transient= a few more problems in the town. I do not recall seeing a run down area of Savannah, although I'm sure there is one

Move to Charleston and visit Savannah. Savannah is more crime ridden.
