Hi All --
I'm off to Maui in three weeks and I am looking for suggestions on lazy, tiki bar places -- not the crazy neon types. We'll be diving and golfing during the day and are looking forward to some evenings looking at the ocean, listening to some great music and having a few margarita's.
We are staying in Keihi, but willing to travel...
Anyone have any suggestions?

I love the Whale's Tale in Lahaina. Erik (thewhaleshark) appears there...check out his website for dates.
There's a Lu Lu's in Kihei, but it's not associated with the Buffett family. Upstairs. Next to the grocery store.
The CIP in Lahaina is also NOT one of Jimmy's, as he mentioned at the Maui show!
Have a meal at Alexander's . . . on Kihei Road...great fish. Fabulous calamari. Locals by the dozens proved it to be a good place. And there's a bar near by...with a good happy hour.
We ate at Lahaina Coolers (off Front Street) after the Buffett show and it was one of the best meals we had while there...lots of locals....they have a TV showing North Shore surfing. Great bar, too.
There's an Alexander's in Lahaina...on the road that runs parallel to Front Street....just opened.
Are you going to see the U'Lalena show at the Maui Magic Theatre? Great Cirque de Solei (sp?) kind of show about the history of the islands. We heard about it from someone sitting next to us at Alexander's and I'm glad we went.
Pacific Whale Foundation is also a great way to go out and watch the whales. We went out of Ma'alena Harbour....closer to Kihei.
If you're going "up country," the vineyard is nice. The Kula Road Inn is a great place for lunch. Fabulous view.
Enjoy! Maui. *Sigh*
Have a marvelous time.

Oh. I forgot. The locals told us there was a great bar called Hoppa's (I think) ... off Kihei Road where they hung out. We never made it there, but everyone mentioned it.

Dadgum. I completely forgot about Charley's in Paia. It's owned by Willie Nelson.
You have to drive a bit, but you can go past Paia a ways, watch the surfers and the sunset and then go back to Charley's. The locals told us that Willie shows up there now and again.

You guys are killing me! I just got back, and I want to live there! The whales are so awesome. We could actually here them singing while we snorkeled.

OK rather than start a new thread..........
We will be staying on Molekai BUT on our last day in Hawaii, we take the puddle jumper back to Honolulu in the a.m. but our flight home doesn't leave till like 10ish at night. What can we do in around the airport, without a car? Or do we need to rent a car for the day?

I'd rent a car for the day...... there's just about nothing near the airport. you could take the bus, but it'd be a major pain with your luggage.

A cab might be cheaper than renting a car for a few hours.

it'd be close....... but probably worth checking with a charter company. besides that, with a cab/charter, there's a driver to stay with your luggage.

I'd definitely head for Waikiki with that amount of time. What do you think, SGH?

Thanks for the advice guys!!!
That brings up another question - are there any lockers at the airport that we could "store" our luggage in???

Not sure, but I don't think so... Lockers are kinda taboo post-9/11....

usually people leaving late leave their luggage at the hotel. And you don't want to leave it in the car in a Waikiki parking garage.....
(If I lived in HI, I'd make a mint offering luggage storage, since so many flights leave late.....)
As far as what to see, depends what you WANT to see. Waikiki is great, but definitely tourist central. If you want scenery, drive the windward (east-facing) side. Magnificent! If you want history, see the Arizona Memorial.... It all depends....

Also, PHAW, check with the airline(s). They may just check the luggage straight through for you and you don't have to worry about it. If so, you can take the bus down to Waikiki and not worry about a car.
Last year, I didn't expect Hawaiian to check my luggage through to American, but they did.
