DON'T forget to go see Buffetts recording studio!!

I lived in KW for a couple of years before I ever found it.. its unadvertised so you may have to look a little while.. it's right on the water at Key West Bight Marina!!

most people miss it...

Check out Waterfront Market while you are at the bight and stop in and tell Michele Geslin at Geslen Sailmakers Anita said hi and tell her i miss her!

If you and momma want the romance of KW .. the catamaran Stars and Stripes has a wonderful sunset cruise... or go to Mallory Square for sunset!

Hard to cram all of KW into one day... no, that's not true.. it's impossible! Captain Tony's, the cigar factory, Mel Fischer's, Little Whitehouse, Hemingways, Sloppy Joe's, Hogs Breathe, Bull and Whistle, Wreckers museum, the list goes on and on... it is truly a VERY unique island! Oh yeah!! Don't forget to go to The Top...

The bat house, the flea market, NO NAME PUB, and the key deer make Big Pine a nice side trip. The Seven Mile Bridge Cafe and Island Cafe in Marathon are great!

Wish i was the tour guide...

You have got to try Turtle Crawls, the best food down there. Conch Fritters, Seafood Bisque is out of this world.

The Waterfront Market has killer conch fritter batter in big tubs, made fresh every day. I usually stop in and take a few back home with me on dry ice.

I lived there for many years as well....Key West is one of those places that is great to visit, but not the best place to live forever.

Here is an example... when I lived there in the early '90s, we had a condo in Truman Annex that was maybe 1000 square feet....purchased new for $110K. Sold two years later for close to $200k. Bought another condo right across from Smathers beach for $175k....appraised last year at $750k.

Key West is an island of two classes....it is very hard to be middle class and live in paradise....

Well... in my case it wasn't the expense of staying as it was the expense of not leaving...

My (step)mom had cancer, I had to go help. I actually left and came back 3 times while momma was sick. I had a business there and as she would leave for her treatments at MD Anderson in Houston, my family and I would return to TRY to earn a living.. then back to Texas .. then back to KW... and so forth. It was really rough on my kids and my ex walked out just before Christmas, 2 weeks before momma died.

The expense of not leaving would have been to turn my back on the one person who loved me more than any other person on earth, and THAT would have been too high a price to pay....I miss her more than any could imagine but i was there to hold her hand when she needed it held; laugh with her when the tears would dry; and dream with her of the paradise to come...

I am the one that gained all the riches....

now you know the RESSSSSST of the story....lol....

Yeah I figured that sounds like the real estate market in the Boston area. It seems every hot spot is ruined by the rich. I coould tell that when I was down there. You know the house boats that were all along North Rosevelt they were all forced out by the City and to have a houseboat in a marina costs a fortune. But I do still love it down there.

Hey Coldwaterconch, Glad we are back to talking about the middle Keys. Got a good story about the Dolphin Research Center (DRC) that is located on Grassy Key (MM58). We usually stay in the middle Keys and were having dinner at a restaurant at “The Wreck”, a nice outdoor bar and grill located on Grassy Key. Our waitress was talking to us about our stay, asking where we were from, etc., and she mentioned that she volunteered on the DRC during the day. She was extremely nice and offered to add our names to a list for a free tour of the DRC. We took her up on it a few days later. Sure nuff, we were on “the list” and got a great tour of the place and ended up spending half the day their. It is a non-profit organization and we made a nice donation on our way out. Definitely recommend it as a place to stop and visit. There is a picture of JB on the wall in the shop swimming with the Dolphins. The cool things was, it turns out it was the original location for the Flipper training school in the 1060’s and I had actually rode the dolphins as a kid. Small world – here I am 30 years later with my kids.

We did a lot of engineering work for the DRC in the mid-80s, so we spent a bit of time there. My brother even used the DRC in his senior thesis (describing the training of dolphins).

It is one of those places that most people blow by on the way to Key West....
