I live across the street from a JR high. You should see some of the shots
those kids throw with the sticks. and that's the girls. I mean full blown
Hank Aarons full swing. and this is in practise I know lacrosse sticks
bend better but wow

While I think that this was a hideous act, I do take some comfort in the fact that it happened to a Nordique. (Just Kidding, Man can't a guy hate the Diques anymore?)

I assume you mean when Pierre Turgeon was decked by Dale Hunter after he scored a goal. You mustn't be from the NY area. That was all people talked after it happened, it was all over the sports page. And I think Hunter got suspended for about 15-20 games at the start of the next season.

i just got to watch it a bunch of times on tv.it was a brutal hit and there is no question he should be suspended.i absolutely disagree that at any time he slammed his head into the ice on purpose or continued to hit him when down.the next punch thrown actually was on bertuzzi himself by the other team and the refs were on it right after that.
the law has no business in this matter and unless you have played and know how emotions can get the better of you and cause you to do stupid things i dont think you can understand what happened at all.i do not condone what happened by any means so dont take this wrong

I hate the fly-by-night hockey fan. We have a ECHl team here and all people show up for is the fighting. That is not hockey!!! The Russian national team came a few years back, and the fans were chanting for a fight. Man I hate that

i am all for fighting and believe it has a solid place in hockey but when fans come just to watch the fights and dont realize they are missing the best game in the world it bothers me.the way the NHL has gone p*** me off.i rarely watch games anymore, only in the playoffs when they allow real hockey to be played.luckily i'm on the ice 4 nights a week myself so i get more than my fill of hockey

Fighting has a place. But I remember the glory days when hockey was played on the rink and a fight would break out only every couple of games. Remember Simenko (SP)

i by no means meant there should be a fight every game but there are just to many people who want it removed from the game.of course most of these people have never played so i dont really care what they think

I understand where it fits into the game. However, I only played jrs. (you know the rules on fighting there) Fighting is to be used as a last resort only when another player has shown a level of disrespect to his opponent.

unfortunately the league doesn't have the balls to truly sanction a player, and the players union won't let it happen.... i'd suspend bertuzzi for as long as moore is out and then add a year, and if burtuzzi's career is ended because of it, tough.

not bad,i would add that if moores career is over then bertuzzi should be suspended for life to match it.

Tommcat - I agree with you about sport and the law staying separate - we have just had a case in the court here where an Aussie Rules footballer was charged with assault for breaking another player's jaw in a match. Fortunately he was acquitted - but it should never have got to that stage - Aussie Rules was a tough sport - now it is being sanitised to fit perceived community standards - pathetic - we are encouraging people to be sissies!! No one wants to see king hits or fights in every game - but some sports are contact sports - that's their appeal - take that out and the game loses.

iv'e been reading this thread for a while and figured i'd chime in, 1st off the NHL features in my opinion some of the best athletes in the world and in my opinion is the only TRUE mainstream contact sport, how long does contact last in the NFL each play is what 6 seconds then they take a minute off? but thats a whole other thread.
the reason i think the police are apt to get involved in this particular incident is the fact that it was SO premeditated everyone and there borther knew Moore was marked in that game, in hockey u protect ur superstar and when he is injured (by Moore in a previous game w/ a clean hit) there is usually some retribution on the "offending" player, they spot shadowed bertuzzi following/stalking moore around the ice for what 10 seconds before he got into perfect position to pop him, now im a hockey purist don't get me wrong but there was nothing "hockey" about that sorry. it wasnt the media's fault that happened, wasnt gary bettman's, it was Todd Bertuzzi's and that's it...he's not going to get any jail time and being one of the most well played players in the NHL any fine isnt going to effect him much but a year minimum is warranted.
and even though i play twice a week now myself, a lockout next year would in NO way, shape or form be beneficial to the sport of hockey for a sport in america that is clearly 4th of the 4 major sports and getting passed by Nascar i think it would set them back 25 years at least.

FINS26,YOU ARE CORRECT IN THE FACT THAT MOORE WAS INDEED A MARKED MAN AND SOMETHING WAS PREMEDITATED.HOWEVER AS A FELLOW PLAYER YOU KNOW THAT RETRIBUTION IS CALLED FOR ALL THE TIME IN THIS SPORT,PEOPLE ARE MARKED MEN QUITE OFTEN BUT I DONT THINK IN ANYWAY THAT SOMEONE INTENDED TO BREAK HIS NECK.I DONT THINK THAT WAS THE COACHES INTENT IF HE DID INDEED CALL FOR IT AND I'M SURE IT WAS NOT BERTUZZIS INTENT EITHER.NORMALLY THAT WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN A SEVERE CHECK OR YOUR STANDARD BEATING,WHICH 99% OF THE TIME RESULTS IN NOTHING MORE THAN A MESSAGE BEING SENT AND MAYBE A BROKEN NOSE AT BEST

tomm your right about the retribution, but the thing that kinda gets me is naslund was out 3 games on what ultimately was a clean hit. moore's "punishment" didn't fit his "crime" if it was something malicious and naslund is out a month or the season then thats one thing, Bertuzzi's an all star probably the best power forward in the league so to speak, his punishment will on the other hand fit his crime, rest of the year and playoffs...

THE FUNNY THING ABOUT IT IS THAT BERTUZZI ISNT REALLY AN ENFORCER.I THINK IF A REAL ENFORCER HAD GONE OUT THERE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CLEANER.THEY KNOW HOW TO DO THIS STUFF THE "RIGHT" WAY.

DEPENDS ON MOORES CONDITION IN MY OPINION

Not enough if Moore can never play again,(im only 28 mind u) i cant remember any victim of those really suspendable cheap shot offenses in hockey not being able to play again, like brashear and pierre turgeon and scott neidermayer for instance all victims of really bad cheap shots this isa whole new ball game if the guy couldnt play again.

I dont think its enough punishment. I agree with the earlier post that it should be however long Moore is out plus a year...without pay. I'm not sure where I stand about if the law should get involved. The league should be able to police itself, and perhaps no prosecution. However, I beleive that Moore should be able to bring a civil suit against Bertuzzi.
