David Allen Coe - Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In Key West Anymore
(written by: David Allen Coe)
This song is for all the people thats been reviewing our records, in different magazines and things, and mentioning the fact that we sound a lot like Jimmy Buffett, because we live in Key West and we use congo drums in our songs. And for all those people that are under the misconception that Mr. Buffett lives in Key West, we'd like to say that theres a lot of things in Key West. As a matter of fact:
Theres sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore,
but Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters ??? ??? has a bumper sticker on the door,
it says "Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore."
They smuggled ??? ??? songs,
snitching on the ???,
bringing heat,
where its already too damn hot to die.
Son of a son of a son of a b****,
is whats all that *****'s for.
Jimmy Buffett he don't live in Key West anymore.
Sailing to the Caribean,
Jimmy might well be.
Pictures up in Rolling Stone,
for all the world to see.
The rich keep getting richer,
the poor will just be poor.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.
Now Jimmy's moved to Malibu,
with all those other stars.
He's not down on ??? Street,
hanging out in bars.
All them goddamn tourists,
got to be a bore.
But Jimmy Buffett doesn't live in Key West anymore.
So don't tell me I sound like Jimmy Buffett,
just because I've got that island beat.
Jimmy might have grown up on the ocean,
me I kind of grown up on the streets.
Music's just a way of life,
to me I'm living free.
So don't play all that Key West Jimmy Buffett s*** on me.
Now divers do it deeper,
must of really made them mad.
Some of them reviewers said,
it really sounded bad.
Well, they liked Margaritaville.
Me, I liked it too.
Someday, Jimmy,
why dont we just both get drunk and screw?
Them creepy motherfuckers,
that think music is a whore,
tell 'em that you just don't live in Key West anymore.
Theres sailboats,
and conch shells,
and palm trees galore.
But Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.
Sisters ??? ??? has a bumper sticker on the door,
Jimmy Buffett, he don't live in Key West anymore.
Alright boys, sound like Jimmy Buffett now!

lyrics are something like
Big orange ball, sinkin' in the water.
Toes in the sand, couldn't get much hotter.
Little umbrella shaped margaritas
Coconut oil, tan senioritas
Oh, now I know how Jimmy Buffett feels.

I'd say David Allan Coe is a little bit more than a "one hit wonder" since he's had other hit songs besides "You Never Even Called Me By My Name". By the same token, I don't think it's fair to say "a lot of his songs are extremely racist" when those songs make up a very small portion of his catalog. In recent years he's said he regrets making those records but sadly, he makes them available through his web site.Gumbo wrote:D.A.C. is pretty much a one-hit wonder. I think he was always p*** he never got the respect (nor did he deserve it) that other "Outlaws" like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, etc. got.

DAC has a catalog of hits, and has written alot of songs that made other country singers famous ("Take this job and shove it" comes to mind). He's not washed up either. He does alot of the bar gigs in between bigger shows. He did that even at the height of his career. Is Jimmy washed up becuase he occasionally plays at his Margaritaville stores?pascagoula run wrote:One hit wonder may not apply but washed up does. D.A.C was just playing a bar in Lakeland Fl. last month. Tickets were 10$ the cover is usely 5$.

DAC has always been a little left of center and his views, habits and lifestyle I believe contribute to his lack of a huge fan base. BUT he does have a fan base. He's also the type of performer I'd rather see in a bar than in a arena.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I've seen him both types of venues. His show is really more geared to smaller, more personal settings. He loves to interact with fans, even doing shots with them in between sets. Only problem with bar shows is that he generally gets really drunk by the end and tends to be pretty nasty to anyone he perceives as an interruption. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but his fan base is extremely loyal.ph4ever wrote: He's also the type of performer I'd rather see in a bar than in a arena.

Like I said in an earlier post David is a rather strange individual.

Well, he *was* once known as the "Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy". I attended one of his shows in the 70s which turned out to be an electric affair because he was out in support of an album that had quite a few rockin' tunes on it (Human Emotions). The show was great but when I saw him a few years later in the early 80s, he was horrible. He used to pass through here (eastern NC) on a fairly regular basis but as you might of gathered by now, his shows are very much a hit or miss proposition. One of the last times he was through here he was apparently too drunk to sing or play so they just had him propped up on the stage while someone from his band sang and played his parts. The show also started real late (after midnight) and ended REAL early (12:30 am) so I'm glad I didn't fork over the $15 to see him that night. In fact, I haven't seen him perform since those two shows in the late 70s and early 80s and am honestly in no rush to see him the next time he comes around given the erratic nature of his performances.

Yeah, it is a real hit or miss kinda deal when it comes to DAC's show quality. But the same is (or was) true for alot of the performers in the outlaw country genre - Merle, Waylon, Hank Sr., Hank Jr., Johnny Cash, etc. Alot of them often showed up too drunk or stoned to pull off a performance.Jahfin wrote:One of the last times he was through here he was apparently too drunk to sing or play so they just had him propped up on the stage while someone from his band sang and played his parts. However the occasional good ones are great.
