Hubby & I are also planning the pilgrimage from Indy to Alpine Valley. We have been debating the route to take. Definitely want to avoid Chicago -- spent a year there last year on Sunday after Alpine Valley. So we will most likely take the side trip through Bloomington. Thanks for the directions and saving our nerves.

It won't be 7 hours, don't worry.
Refills on coffee??? Who's drinking coffee. Mimosas in the morning to get started, then off to the bud light.
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

I'm a chicago suburbanite, with inlaws out near I39, so listen when I tell you that the Chicago traffic won't be half as bad as the advice above! Clearly, this route is INSANE!Joe Merchant wrote:Yeah....that construction project is going to s*** bigtime. If it were me I would cut up thur Michigan and the UP and approach Alpine from the north instead of dealing with the construction. Just an idea......
Indy-Bloomington-Alpine (350 miles) would be my first choice, followed by I65 thru Chicago (290 miles) unless you felt like detouring through the Downers Grove CIP for lunch. The real problem won't be the construction as much as the I65-I80 interchange (always a total pain) and the traffic on either 94 or 294 North, which is why the I39 scenic route wins my vote.
As for a rendezvous, pick either a major, unmistakably spot like the Rt. 38 (Rochelle) Petra mega-truckstop (IL mile 99) in Illinois, south of Rockford, or the easier to miss but oh-so-close convenience of the Wisconsin rest stop just south of East Troy (WI mile 33). BTW, the Wisconsin mounties LOVE out of state plates approaching Alpine, keep strictly - I mean exactly, do NOT push it - at the legal 65. I annually laugh heartily at the unwary donating to Cheeseland.
