Man Thought He Was Running Over Bin Laden
Frenchman Convicted for Attempt to Run Over Pedestrian He Mistook for Osama Bin Laden
The Associated Press
MONTPELLIER, France March 17 — A Frenchman was convicted for trying to run over a pedestrian he mistook for Osama bin Laden.
The 35-year-old, identified as a struggling artist named Pierre, was sentenced Tuesday by a court in this southern France city to a three-month suspended prison term and ordered to pay euro500 ($615) to the victim, who was unharmed.
The man's lawyer, David Mendel, said his client was traumatized by last week's terror attacks in Madrid and was temporarily the "victim of a hallucination," while driving Monday through Montpellier's historic center.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was able to run from the oncoming car, which crashed along the side of a street.
"It wasn't bin Laden," Mendel said. "If it was, we would have won US$5 million."
The Madrid train bombings, which killed 201 people, increasingly appear to have been orchestrated by Islamic extremists with links to bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network.

I KNOW THAT LEE,I JUST TAKE EVERY CHANCE I CAN TO BASH THE FRENCH.Key Lime Lee wrote:France never suggested Osama wasn't a bad guy...
I think y'all are confusing the issues.
We hate France because they didn't want to support our pre-emptive invasion of Iraq, not because they wouldn't help us fight Al Queda.

I thought we hated the French because they never paid us back from all the loans we gave them after WWII and they basically treat us like crap.

I hate the French because when my parents vacationed there, they had a horrible time due to the rude, ignorant, classless way they were treated just for being Americans. And this was 10 years ago. Americans visit and spend money there, while treat us like crap. Nice deal.

I hate them because they smell like the cheese they eat, and a lot of the women have armpit hair!

Ok I've been good til now but now I have to say my piece. Please don't anyone take this personally but.....
Being of French heratage I have to say that this thread is p*** me off.
The first thing I need to say is that I have been to France. In 1978 my ship pulled into a small port town that had not been visited by a US Navy ship since WWII. It was a very nice place and the people were very happy to have us there and bent over backward to welcome us to their city. We had a very enjoyable visit and before we left one lady came aboard with bars of very good quality chockolet bars. Enough for the ENTIRE crew, to thank us for the visit.
If any of you have ever been to France you probably know they are a very polite people until you start reminding them of all the things wrong with their country. Then they get mad and rightfully so. You would do the same to any visitor to our country who bad mouthed us.
The problem I have is with the French Government and I do have problems with them, but the French people are at most times warm and caring people. Just like the people right here in our own back yard.
As for the sign Jahfin saw in 1972 all I can say is I am sorry you had to see that. Anybody remember about the same time frame (maybe a litte before) the signs in Norfork Virginia that read SAILORS AND DOGS KEEP OFF THE GRASS?
Ok I am done venting now. All I ask is that you carefully consider what you say about anyone before you say it.
Thank you.

i'm with you don... i had a great time in paris... but then, unlike the hoards of fat, loud, obnoxious stupid american tourists that infested the city like cockroaches, i made it a point to remember that I was in a foreign city, not a euro-disney attraction.

WHY WOULD BEING OF FRENCH HERITAGE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BASHING FRANCE?I'M ITALIAN AND SCOTCH AND COMMENTS ABOUT EITHER COUNTRY HAVE NO EFFECT ON ME.I'M NOT FROM THERE,I'M AMERICAN.THAT WOULD BE LIKE ME GETTING ALL UPSET BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE BADMOUTHING THE MAFIA AND MAKING JOKES ABOUT THE ITALIAN AND THE MAFIA.IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME.
I GUESS I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY PEOPLE GET LIKE THAT
NO OFFENSE DON,JUST A QUESTION

It offends me too Tom, and I'm not French. I'm just not a fan of baseless bashing - it demonstrates a lack of tolerance and, in most cases, a lack of understanding. I don't care if its the French, the Jews, the African Americans, the Islamic or whomever...
When we as a nation start to accept responsibility for our own behavior and work to improve our own faults, perhaps I'll feel differently...
