More Buffett Influence Country

Post by Bob Roberts »

I heard a new Country song on the radio on the way home this evening that fits into the "Buffet influenced" Carribean feel style of Country. It was by Tracy Byrd and called "How'd I Wind Up In Jamaica?" Here are the lyrics.......
Sign said: "Cold beer," so I pulled in there,
Pulled up a chair to have just one.
Now my head hurts. I got this sun burn.
Oh, what on earth have I done?

How'd I wind up in Jamaica,
Washed up like some lost cast away?
How did one round of beer lead to me layin' here,
On this bed of sand in Montego Bay?

Hey, don't I know you? Ain't you the girl who,
I was talking to back at the bar?
Your dress was light green an' I had on blue jeans.
Tell me, what's it mean when we don't know where they are?

How'd I wind up in Jamaica?
Was it your wild hair or was it mine?
Oh, I barely remember you cussing December,
As you passed me that salt an' the lime.
Ring a bell?

Instrumental break.

It's been a year now. We're still here now.
All settled down, might not go back again.
Like a couple of beach bums, we hardly work much.
An' still ask each other every now and then:

How'd we wind up in Jamaica?
Was it your wild hair or was it mine?
Oh, who cares? It don't matter. We're happy ever after.
Now, pass me that salt an' lime.

We got it made here in Jamaica.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
To this day, it ain't clear. All I know is we're here,
On this bed of sand in Montego Bay.

It's a really cool song featuring steel drums and all. It is just great to see Jimmy's influence in Country music now days. Kenny Chesney is doing it, Alan Jackson, now Tracy Byrd, and they are doing a pretty dang good job at it too. It is so great to turn on the radio and hear my favorite kind of music like this everyday.

**Oh, and just before somebody decides to take a wisecrack at this about how they think these artist are not worthy enough to do "Jimmy's music", or how they are riding the coat-tails of Buffett and earning money for it, or how they have been a PH for 185 years  and they don't want all these new fans joining into the flock,.............BITE ME!!! BITE ME HARD!!   You people should take your thumb out of your own butthole once in a while and realize that you're not some special person that is entitled to one kind of music or lifestyle and that others are not! I have kept my mouth shut on this for too long, and I'm sick of peoples' bitching! In my opinion, as well as many others, these people that are joining in the "Carribean Cowboy" style are only complimenting the father of it all.....Mr. Buffett himself. It's a "hats off" to him, and I think he really enjoys it. No, there will never be anybody just like JB, or even close to him. But its really cool to see all the new talent and see what we've got to look forward to when Jimmy decides to hang it up. Parrotheadism is about laying back and having fun in a "beach style". It's not about being cocky and arrogant about yourself, or being to good for anybody else that wants to join in on the fun. Any true PH would be delighted to see new faces in the crowd, just knowing what they can experience that we all already know and live by. People, we gotta lighten up and just have fun with it all. I will close with what Buffett said in his latest interview on the Today show back a month or so ago. He said that people need to just lighten up and have fun, it's all just a fantasy, and it's about relaxing and enjoying yourself. Take it from our man, just let the good times role!

BR, I will have to agree with you....

However, I still think country radio plays 97% junk....

...but if some tropical sounds start coming through, it's gotta be better than without 'em...

The fact that country artists (oops....I mean singers), respect and are influenced by Jimmy, It is long overdue, but it's nice to see Jimmy get some praise...

I saw this coming quite a few years ago when Doug Supernaw
said at a show Hell there's more Jimmy Buffett on the tour busses than
there are nintendos. and a coupla years after that Clay Walker said almost the same thing.

Bob, I too agree having just seen Kenny, the show was one of the best and the tropical theme didn't seemed staged, it was just Kenny doing his thing. Spreading a little sunshine and beach is really a good thing, and somewhere Jimmy is smiling all the way to the bank.

Here's another awesome Buffett inspired country song by a band called "The Great Divide." This has been one of my favorites for years.

Pour Me A Vacation by The Great Divide

(Chorus)
Barmaid, play me some Buffet, I'm in a mood to get away
So Pour me a vacation, I need to leave here right away
I got to get out by the ocean, if its all in my mind
Take me out to paradise only for tonight
I can leave it all behind.

This Friday night here in this big town, This old routine its starts to
bore
Same old lies and songs and storys that I heard the week before
I wanna hear about the islands, about pirates and rum
Don't wanna think about tomorrow, not until tomorrow comes
(Repeat Chorus)

They sent the new barmaid to safe me, Put me on my coastal trail
Well I've been landlock here for so long, its bout time I'd set sail
No I can't aford the airfare, so put umbrellas in my drink
And I'll waste away in Margaritaville and pray this boat dont sink

Jimmy Buffett doesn't have a patent on mixing island sounds with country music. He might the most successful one at doing it but he's by no means the only one that's tried.

I know a lot of people bust on the country singers for copying buffet however Bubba himself also copies other artist.

Just look at all the cover songs he has sung over the years in concert.

I wonder if the grateful dead people are claiming that buffet is trying to be jerry Garcia. Uncle John's Band is a dead song.

I just feel the that some of the country music artist bashing is unneeded.

That being said I still feel that the country music artist should be careful they do not over do it.

The "bonus track" on the Tracy Byrd CD is a live version of a song called "10 rounds with Jose Cuervo". That is a pretty good one too, even throws in a little Margaritaville riff at the end.

I like the fact that we can find music similar to Buffett's in other areas. Whether it is Jim Morris, or country artists or the Dead. Bring it on, just more to add to my mixed CDs!

Has anyone heard the song "Loco" (I think that's the name of it) by ...Ican't remember his first name, but the last name is Murphy. I'm not real into country music but I sometimes have it on for background music and some of it is pretty good

I agree it's cool to hear all the Buffett inspired music on the radio but I think fans get their feathers ruffled because of the lack of Jimmy on the radio. It will be interesting to see how much play LTC gets on the radio.

David Lee Murphy sings this one, the same guy that did "Dust on the Bottle" a few years back. It's another good song with a heavy Buffett influence. One of the local radio stations did a phone interview with him, and he said Buffett had been an influence for a long time. I'm with Bob, it's nice to finally see Jimmy getting the respect he deserves. I mean, Alan Jackson and George Strait are opening for Jimmy Buffett. This is long overdue.
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win

Couldn't agree more. I don't see anyone disagreeing, actually.

I just got this CD today. It's called "Tryin' to Get There." The title track was co-written by Waylon Jennings. Not only is there a Buffett influence, there is a VERY strong outlaw influence. It's a good listen.
