That's just my opinion of a few of the artists suggested in this thread, that doesn't mean you or anyone else have to agree with it. Personally, I'll take Jerry Jeff and Buffett's brand of "Gulf & Western" over any other artist that's been mentioned so far but that's just my take on it.son of a beach wrote:uh.........whateverJahfin wrote:I second that commotion especially since most of the artists being named are wannabe hat acts that wouldn't know what real country music was if it jumped up and bite 'em on the ass.ph4ever wrote:The whole Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits CD by Jerry Jeff Walker.

I just tend to be more fond of artists outside of the mainstream, I always have (beginning with Buffett more years ago than I care to remember). Not just because they're out of the mainstream but because I just prefer those artists. That's not to say I don't like any artists that enjoy mainstream success, I do, but artists that exist outside of the mainstream usually do so for good reason. They seem to be less compromising when it comes to artistic integrity, especially these days when that is all too easy to do just to get airplay. A lot of the artists that enjoy mainstream success have done so at the expense of what made their music special to begin with and I just don't have as much respect for them.son of a beach wrote:No prob, I just feel that the artists mentioned are not wanna bes, certainly not "most" of them.
I have to agree though I prefer Jimmy and JJW's gulf and western, and throw in a little Guy Clark too.
Good call on Guy Clark, of course not all of his music is of the Gulf and Western variety but quite a few songs are (or at least have nautical themes): "Blowin' Like a Bandit", "The South Coast of Texas", "Boats To Build", "Supply and Demand", and "The Ballad of Laverne and Captain Flint" to name just a few.
