I think an A-hole who is up-front about it is much easier to take! My husband takes PRIDE in being one, but tells everybody first. Example: he works in a tire plant, and is one of those office guys who irritates those who really don't want to work. One day, during a thunderstorm, he was unlucky enough to be on the "floor" and the electricity went off. He yells out, "Anybody got a problem with me, now's your chance!". When promptly somebody coldcocks him right upside the head, giving him a nice little star show. He and the guy who did it now laugh about it. He's a LIKEABLE A-hole!!!!!!

I'm not referring just to one person or just to that thread in particular. I saw someone ask a perfectly legitimate question in another part of this message board and rather than give them a straight answer some other posters began putting the person down. If they never return to this web site I must say I couldn't blame them one bit.
I've also noticed that if the topic is deemed unsuitable by someone or they just don't like the direction it's going in, they start posting nonsensical stuff instead. I guess that may be the way of things around here but I prefer an atmosphere where the situation can be discussed and sorted out rather than just glossed over as though nothing happened.
During the recent flare up in the Best Bands thread I had some people send me PMs that were of a less than favorable nature concerning some of their fellow posters here. Rarely have I been witness to such backbiting on a web site. Yes, I know it happens but it's one of the last things I expected to experience here.
Then, there was the case of my Johnny Cash avatar (for those that never saw it, it was the historic shot of him shooting the finger). I had someone send me a PM saying it was inappropriate. I asked this person if they were the site owner or a moderator but they never identified themselves as either. I also tried to explain why I didn't feel the image was inappropriate, especially for a Jimmy Buffett site, an artist that's known for having less than a pristine image himself. I was told that there are kids that visit here and that was one of the reasons I was being asked to remove it. For the record, I use the same avatar on message boards for Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin, both of which are frequented by a large amount of teenagers as well as older fans. Not once have I been reprimanded for it at either of those sites. In any case, I was still asked to remove it, but before I could do so, it was removed for me. I understand each site is different and what is acceptable in some may not be acceptable in another and I respect that. I replaced my avatar with a photo of Peter Tosh smoking ganja. I figured this was ok since someone else here has an avatar with Buffett smoking a joint. Strangely enough, not a word has been said. Odd that a photo of Johnny Cash shooting the bird was deemed inappropriate but it's ok to include shots of Tosh and Buffett smoking weed. Go figure...

There is backstabbing in life. It was once pointed out by someone else that this board is cliquish (which yes it is in many cases) but are you sure the posters didn't all know each other personally and wern't just kidding aroundJahfin wrote:

It has always been the nature of this board for people to veer off subject on almost every subject. That's just the way it is and it's been that way since before I registered (I was a lurker long before I registered). It may be they are just trying to diffuse someone's attitude - maybe they are familiar with the posters involved.Jahfin wrote:I've also noticed that if the topic is deemed unsuitable by someone or they just don't like the direction it's going in, they start posting nonsensical stuff instead. I personally never saw the avatar - not familiar with the shot. That isn't the impression I got. The person was chastised for even asking. The people doing the chastising may of "thought" they were being humorous, but it struck me as them trying to make the person feel bad for even asking in the first place. I wouldn't call that "backstabbing", I'd call it being rude.

I'm not referring to getting off topic, that happens and is only natural. I'm talking about the refusal to address the matter at hand by totally ignoring it. In my experience, that tactic doesn't help the matter at all. Just because someone choses to ignore something doesn't mean it's going to go away. In fact, it may only make it worse.

That's exactly what I'm referring to. Rather than allowing myself to be dragged into it I chose simply not to respond. Even though I've been here a while now, I'm still getting accustomed to who's who. I do not know any of you by your real names and often am not aware of of a person's gender. I'm sure someone will make a joke about that, I'm just trying to say some of you have interacted with me as though I'm supposed to know who you are and who other people are and I haven't a clue to who you're referring to but I'm learning, so please bare with me.

Edited to say: As you can see, I'm also not quite familar with how to do the quote thing, so until I learn to do it properly I've put my most recent responses in italics.

That someone was me. You never asked me if I was the site owner. You asked if my opinions were of the site owner or myself. You can clearly see in several areas of the board who are the moderators. Then, there was the case of my Johnny Cash avatar (for those that never saw it, it was the historic shot of him shooting the finger). I had someone send me a PM saying it was inappropriate. I asked this person if they were the site owner or a moderator but they never identified themselves as either.
I'm sure you didn't feel it was inappropriate, but the site owner did.I also tried to explain why I didn't feel the image was inappropriate, especially for a Jimmy Buffett site, an artist that's known for having less than a pristine image himself. I was told that there are kids that visit here and that was one of the reasons I was being asked to remove it
Then those site owners have different 'rules' than what there are here. For the record, I use the same avatar on message boards for Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin, both of which are frequented by a large amount of teenagers as well as older fans. Not once have I been reprimanded for it at either of those sites.
The ONLY person that can remove avatars is the site owner. In any case, I was still asked to remove it, but before I could do so, it was removed for me. I understand each site is different and what is acceptable in some may not be acceptable in another and I respect that.
Some things are simply more obvious to some than others. Flipping the bird was obvious. Your current avatar is somewhat difficult to see.I replaced my avatar with a photo of Peter Tosh smoking ganja.

Thanks Al
Yes I will see you again in Tinley Park, I will be at the Holiday Inn all weekend long. This time, the party can start early, and we wont have to water down any drinks at all, as long as I am playing bartender.
BTW---I just wanted to see what everyone thought of me. As Garry said You have to meet me to know me. Yes I can be an a**hole at times, and sad to say, thats just how I am, no one can change me. Just the way I am. Those of you who wanna see the real me, Meet me in Alpine or Chicago, and you can experience the real thing.
