I replaced my avatar with a photo of Peter Tosh smoking ganja. I figured this was ok since someone else here has an avatar with Buffett smoking a joint. Strangely enough, not a word has been said. Odd that a photo of Johnny Cash shooting the bird was deemed inappropriate but it's ok to include shots of Tosh and Buffett smoking weed. Go figure...

Some things are simply more obvious to some than others. Flipping the bird was obvious. Your current avatar is somewhat difficult to see.

Although Johnny Cash wasn't directing it at BNers, and you most likely weren't either, the bird avatar said "f*** you" to anyone who read your posts, which isn't a very nice way to go thru life.

A weed-smoking avatar just says "dude, whats up?"

Then, there was the case of my Johnny Cash avatar (for those that never saw it, it was the historic shot of him shooting the finger). I had someone send me a PM saying it was inappropriate. I asked this person if they were the site owner or a moderator but they never identified themselves as either.

That someone was me. You never asked me if I was the site owner. You asked if my opinions were of the site owner or myself. You can clearly see in several areas of the board who are the moderators.

This will seem like nitpicking but I must use the following quotes in order to clarify. I asked "Just wondering, is this just your personal opinon or is this coming from the owner of the site?" To which you replied: "The owner is not very tolerant of certain photos. And has his moderators always looking out for them", which didn't answer my question. You may of thought it did, but rather than just answering with a simple yes or no you replied rather vaguely. Yes, I did gather that the owner felt this way but what I was trying to determne was whether or not you were a moderator or just a fellow poster voicing your opinion. Your reply did not answer that question. And, until you pointed it out, I didn't notice anything about who the various moderators are here.

The ONLY person that can remove avatars is the site owner.

Again, not to nitpick but that's not entirely true. I can access my member profile and delete the URL myself. Also, let me clarify that I am not trying to be disrespectful or argumentative. I'm just making it clear that BN members also have the ability to alter their or delete their avatars.

Again, not to be difficult, but when I look at my avatar I can clearly see a bowl hanging out of Tosh's mouth. It was just the irony of the situation that struck me. It may not be the best analogy, but it's kind of like how there was such an uproar over Janet Jackson baring a breast at the Super Bowl yet violence (in movies, on TV and in video games) seems to be ok in our society.

Just to further clarify that I am not trying to be difficult or argumentative, I was just asking. In that regard, thanks for taking the time to explain these things to me.

You're right, that wasn't my intention at all. I just think that photo is very representative of Johnny Cash and all that he stood for, especially in his ongoing battles against the music industry. Yes, a shot of a person smoking weed may be a more peaceful image but if the point is to shield young eyes from inappropriate images you would think one of someone smoking weed would fall under that category, especially since it is still illegal in this country whereas self-expression is not (at least for the time being ). I think sometimes people also tend to forget that they were teens once too and I don't know about the rest of you but I was far from being an angel at that age myself.

I have no idea who Peter Tosh is, but if he's the guy in Jahfin's current avatar, there is no way to differentiate what he's smoking to be anything other than tobacco.

Peter Tosh, along with Bunny Wailer, were original members of the Wailers with Bob Marley. Around the same time their name began appearing as "Bob Marley and the Wailers" on their album covers, a split among those original core members had occurred and Peter and Bunny left to pursue solo careers. Peter appeared at least a couple of times on Letterman back in the 80s but is perhaps best known his duet with Mick Jagger on the Temptations classic "(You Gotta Walk And) Don't Look Back". I've always thought of the original Wailers as the Beatles of reggae and of Tosh as the John Lennon to Marley's McCartney. Bob Marley certainly never backed down from his political stance but his work was also peppered with many more love songs than you're likely to find in Tosh's catalog, who took a much more militaristic stance both musically and publically. Sadly, Tosh was murdered on September 11, 1987 at his home in Jamaica. Although it hasn't aired much, his life story was the subject of one of the episodes of VH1's Behind the Music a few years back. I agree...if you don't think a thread warrents your time and attention...don't read it! I don't understand why some feel the need to critisize what people write, whether they think it warrents 5 pages or not. Obviously, if people are responding to this...it has some merrit, even if all don't think so.

You may not have any desire to shut it down but you did ask "When will this poll be over?" earlier in this thread which seems to indicate to me that you are somehow unhappy with it. I have no idea what the reasoning was behind starting the thread and whether the question has been answered or not seems to be beside the point. I've found the thread to be most informative and I don't know about sirgumby but it has allowed me to better understand some things about this site and the people that post here that I wasn't aware of before. Not to mention I've seen other threads where questions have been asked and lots of people answered them (and countinue to answer them) but I haven't noticed those being shut down or anyone asking why they haven't. Once again, I'm not trying to be argumentative here, just adding my two pesos, which isn't worth much but I appreciate the opportunity to do so.
