If I Had A Boat

Post by Goodman »

I know that Jimmy had this on the setlist a couple of summers ago but I've never got to hear his cover of this Lyle Lovett tune. I did hear Tom Rush cover it a couple of weeks ago at Alexandria's reknown Birchmere. A funny, strange tune; as for the Rush version- Lovett. Maybe JB will add it to the LTC setlist.

I was flipping through stations a few weeks ago and heard Lyle Lovett introducing Jimmy Buffett as one of his songwriting heroes. They played a live version of the two of them on acoustic guitars. Jimmy chimed in on the Tonto verse and the crowd went nuts. It's probably the best version I've ever heard. I don't know what CD it's from or if it's even available.

Jimmy played If I Had a Boat and No Woman, No Cry in his solo acoustic intermission set facing back-stage in Dallas, Feb 2001 or 2002 at Reunion Arena. We had nosebleed behind the stage and it really was the highlight of the show.

It's a great song and I hope it's included on this year's tour.

That might be from the benefit show they both appeared at on LI a few years ago, 2000 maybe? Jimmy did it at the Jones Beach show that year.

I love that song!! I have heard a couple versions of that song and on one of the live versions, Buffett says it's one of the songs he wants to include on an album...maybe LTC will be it!!

If I Had A Boat

Fool Button-

You mean if I push the Fool Button I get an MP-3 player? Well, if I had an MP-3 player I'd sell it and buy me a boat. Then I'd torch the boat collect the insurance and get me some Jones Beach tickets for Labor Day! :-0

Thanks for the generous offer but I'm a vinyl man.

Send you If I Had A Boat

Post by Goodman »

To all my dear Parrothead Friends - you know who you are. I deeply appreciate your offers to send me MP-3, emails, hard copies, vinyls, etc. You are all too generous. It's April now and I'm still doing my Tom Rush homework- leftover from the Birchmere. Shortly I'll begin prepping for the Jerry Jeff Walker show in NYC's BBKing Room. After June I officially commence studying for the JB show @ JB. The sessions are rigorous and only the strong survive.

Seriously, friends an neighbors, If I Had A Boat I'd scoop you all up and we'd sail to Montana or similar dry ports of call. :-)

Here's the killer- I like JJW's Boats to Build cover of Guy Clark better n If I Had a Boat.

And as much as I like Jerry Jeff, I prefer Guy's original version of "Boats" over Jerry Jeff's cover. Same goes for "L.A. Freeway" and the majority of Jerry Jeff's other Guy covers. Not that he doesn't do a great job, I think he does, I just prefer the originals.

Boats To Build- Clark v JJW

Post by Goodman »

Jahfin

I respect you going with your Guy- here's my story. I was introduced to JJW courtesy of the COBO- Cowboy Boots & Bathin Suits. When I saw JJW for the very first time at the Bowery Ballroom in spring 2001 that 1997 album was semi- old. My favorite tune on the CD was Boats to Build. Now as you know JJW don't take requests. Nevereheless, late in the set he announced he'd to a tune from said CD. Just as he started I called out Boats and he launched the tune. Match, set, point, fan for life.

I ever get the chance to see the Guy, I will try. I'm sure he's great. :-)

I discovered both artists around the same time with Jerry Jeff coming first (probably not long after Buffett). The first album I recall hearing was It's a Good Night for Singin' (which I have on vinyl somewhere) but the first time I heard it, it was on 8-track. Believe it or not, I still haven't seen Jerry Jeff live but I now have several Guy Clark shows under my belt. The first one was at MerleFest in North Wilkesboro, NC not long after Townes Van Zandt died. Steve Earle was there that weekend as well and I'm sure you know how much they both love Townes so, needless to say, it was a very emotional weekend. One of many highlights for me was hearing those two pair up for an afternoon acoustic set which they started off with Townes' "White Freightliner Blues" with it's line "Well, it's bad news from Houston, half my friends are dying". As you might of guessed, there wasn't a dry eye in the house during their set. I'm off on a ramble here but while I'm at I must mention the new DVD treatment of the classic documentary that features Townes, Guy Clark, David Allan Coe, Steve Young (famous for writing "Lonesome On'ry and Mean" and "Seven Bridges Road"), Steve Earle and others called Heartworn Highways. I'm sure you're well aware of it but I thought some others here might be interested in it as well. More info is available here:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Heartwo ... review.php

By the way, try to see Guy Clark live the next time you get a chance, you sure won't regret it. He was through here (NC) early last year with a very promising new artist named Mary Gauthier (I think many Buffett fans would love her song "Christmas in Paradise" which is hilarious) opening the show. In front of a full house, Guy unplugged his acoustic and walked to the edge of the stage to perform perhaps the best version I've ever heard him do of "The Randall Knife", it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. He flubbed a few lines but he contributed that to something his wife Susanna once said about him, "Guy, your short term memory is so bad you could hide your own Easter Eggs". When I speak on this board about "real" country music and not the stuff that passes for it on country music radio today, artists like Jerry Jeff and Guy Clark are exactly who come to mind (but I'm sure you already know that ;) ).

"Boats To Build" is just a great song. I've had the pleasure of seeing both artists perform it live and I've wanted to hear Buffett do it for a long time.

I've been a Guy Clark fan since 98 or so and I finally had the chance to see him live in Greenville, TX this winter. Like JB and JJW, Guy is a great storyteller with his songs and he really entertains the audience.

One of the 3 best concerts I've ever been to was Jerry Jeff at Possum Kingdom Lake for the 4th of July Weekend last year. It was an outdoor concert, right on the water and we slept on the boat all weekend. For the concert and fireworks I docked the boat and we blended in with the crowd. I pulled the tow tubes off the boat and my wife and I lounged in them while the kids made sand castles in the horseshoe pits in front of the stage. I kept looking for a seaplane and half expected Bubba to show up at any time.
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening

I'm glad to see other Guy and Jerry Jeff fans here. Personally, I'd much rather see a performance grouping Buffett, Guy and Jerry Jeff than one with George Strait and Alan Jackson, but maybe that's just me. :D

Guy/Jerry Jeff/JB

Post by Goodman »

Jahfin & Fourplay

From JB to JJW and from JJW to Guy Clark. Yet without JJW there aint no Jimmy Buffett!. Not sure I can say that about Guy & Jerry Jeff yet I must admit LA Freeway was the first tune by JJW I played the hell out of.

Last summer I rushed to get JJW tickets at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett (LI) hoping JB would drop in as he had done the year before. I even dragged Mrs. Goodman with me. JB was a no-show but JJW put on a great show and even did a personal favorite (Little Man).

I've rambled and scrambled here and we ain't even talked about John Prine or Tom Rush.

Jahfin- when & where did Bob Marley and JB perform on the same bill together in Chicago?

Goodman,
I'm not familiar with Tom Rush. I can tell we have similar non-Buffett tastes, so I'm going to take your recommendation. Is there a particular CD I should start off the collection with?
