Locks of Love

Post by MelliJellyBean »

Anyone ever donated their hair?

I just did......got 10 inches cut off it! My hair is soooo much shorter and I'm about ready to cry, but it's worth it. A sacrifice for a great cause.

One of my friends just got cancer and I thought it was the right thing to do. I have such pretty long hair...but no longer...its just above my shoulders...but still nice.

Its just gonna take a while to get used to!

That's wonderful.. BOTH of you. :) My hair's too short already. I'd be bald if I tried. ;) I would if I could!

Just in case anyone is interested in doing it here are the requirements:

We accept 10" minimum hair length (tip to tip), not wigs, falls, or synthetic hair
Please bundle hair in ponytail or braid.
Hair needs to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag, then padded envelope.
We need hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.
Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).
Hair swept off the floor is not usable.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail.
Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.
You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10".
The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.
Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails for donation.

If you want to visit their site: http://www.locksoflove.org/

It really is a kewl organization

I had two friends who did it and I was so very proud of them. Congrats to both Melli and PHAW for your contribution. Should I ever decide to cut my hair short again I plan on doing the same as it is such a worthy cause.

I did that my senior year in high school (April 2002) and loved the cause that I was doing it for. I gave 12 inches! The short hair takes awhile to get used to, but don't worry, you will. However, my one gripe is that they said they'd send a confirmation for receiving it and I never received one.... I'm assuming they got it though. Anywho, it's a great cause! Way to go!

I had never heard of it ..... and read it on here this afternoon, then tonight I was watching TV and Extreme Makeover.

They had this guy on (in USA) who had his pony tail cut off as part of his makeover and donated to Locks of Love.

At his "unveiling" they had the young 9yo girl that got his "hair" there to meet him - I admit to having tears streaming down my face as I watched this beautiful moment   :D :D

That's too bad Allison that you didn't receive the confirmation. It's just a postcard but it was so cute....

I have two pony tails ready to go, but promised my sister I would wait until she could get hers out of storage locker. It's been awhile.

It takes 10 donations to make an entire wig, so that's alot of growing! That would probably take me 5 -10 years!
