Fun firsts, everyone!! :D
Tiki Bar wrote:I'm bringing my big brother to the Chicago show today, and I figure I might have mentioned him on BN, somewhere down the line.

Gregg has seen Jimmy at the Quiet Knight, and he used to go to concerts before the days of "parrot heads"... he never brought me because I was a teenager, and he didn't want to expose me to the adult behavior tailgating! He's in for a big surprise in the parking lot!

This is gonna be fun - I can't wait to share the whole experience with him!

He also played Banana Republics, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Pencil Thin Mustache, and CILCIA quite a bit too.

I don't recall when I 1st heard them by this Jimmy Buffett character, but I'm sure it was back then as well.
Good day!! :D

. . this is a post from long, long ago . . .

many years ago , as a single Mom , I lived next door to a law student. He, his girlfriend, and I became very close friends. One day we were discussing plans for his upcoming birthday and asked his party request . . .

" I want to have a pool party , and a pig roast . "

She and I rolled our eyes , and said . . " we have no pool . .but the pig we can do . ." We then came up with a plan and the invitations were sent . . .

. . . . BYOP and a BOI . .
. .bring your own pool . .and a bag of ice . .

The day before his surprise party , he dug the ceremonial pit and went to pick up the pig at the meat market. While he was gone, she had 3 truck loads of sand dumped and spread in the backyard.

That entire night was a tropical setting straight out of the islands . .that night Memphis, Tn was Negril . .complete with roasting pig , tiki torches and sand between our toes . .

The next day our guests started arriving , marching up the street with plastic pools carried like canoes. Over to the side 3 ring blow-up pools were taking shape. . and the BOI piled up 3 ft tall . . two small pools were set up , one for homemade Sangria and one full of ice cold beer . .

all totaled 18 pools filled the backyard . . and were used as table/chairs and general meet and greet areas. . lawyers and housewives, designer shirts and K-Mart t-shirts sitting in the same pool . . .

It was truly a perfect party . . fun idea to get this summer off to a great start . .

btw, these are the friends that introduced me to Jimmy's music . . so many years ago . .

. . and yes, it was only the Yellow Album I heard that night . . .but before the summer was over I went to my first concert . . . Off to See the Lizard . . at Mud Island . . . and was the only person ( I think ) that knew the words to That's my Story . . . ! !

. .my other favorite memory is that I introduced BG2 to Jimmy's music . . .she went to her first concert with me . . .in 1988 . . I still have the program . .

. .her first comments were " what are they DOING with their hands ? ? " . . during Fins. . ! !

Margaritaville. I was 8 and thought it was just a funny song. Never thought anything of it again.

Then when I was in college, there was this guy in my Fraternity who used to be a big parrothead. I used to go up to his room, listen to "songs you know by heart' on his huge speakers. It was different then what I was used to hearing (U2, Springsteen, and the likes). I'd go up there and sit every once in awhile. He's give everyone a beer and we'd chill out.

Funny thing was I was actually going to start a thread like this today. I was just thinking about this the other day. My son was running around with my copy of "Songs You Know By Heart" . I looked at the disc and smiled. A rush of memories came back to me.

We were across the street from Illinois State University and we were a sports bar, before that name was coined and had a great juke box. No DISCO was allowed, we had Waylon, Wille,Charlie Daniels, Beach Boys, Beatles, Doobies, oldies like Buddy Holly and of course, Tom T. Halls "I Like Beer"

Where was your bar at? I graduated from ISU not all that long ago. And I'm pretty certain I didn't miss a bar in that town, but I don't remember that name.

Mine too was Margaritaville. My dad bought the CILCIA album, and I asked him to play the song so much, that he went out and bought the the 45. I was 6-7 years old, and love the story and the music. Over the years my Dad continued to buy his albums, and we would listen to them during dinner (along with some other good music).

I didn't hit my Parrothead stride until 1995-96 a couple of years out of college, and a buddy of mine wanted to know if I wanted to see a show. It was all down hill from there. Oh the memories and friends I have made!

37 shows later, I am thrilled to death to be taking my son (9mos old) to his first Buffett show this weekend in Newport. He is only 9 mos old and will not have any memory of it later, but daddy will and the photos will last a lifetime.

I believe my first was in my sisters car (a white Z24 caviler back when those were cool) she put on WDWGDAS. I took her Songs you Know by Heart CD and I have been hooked ever since. Next thing you know I was at my first Buffett show. My first was at Popular Creek in IL. Now that was a place to see a show!

307 S Main across from the late Walker Hall. At the time Warehouse Liquors was upstairs and we were downstairs. We were mainly a Walker D-B, Virgin Islands hangout. I lived in Manchester and Waterson before I got the job there and had only ventured to that side of campus once or twice. I mostly went to The Cellar, downtown. Last time I was in town, I think it was a Kinko's or something like that
