1st Buffett show- what do I need to know?

Post by phlisa »

This is my first post- coinciding with my soon to be first JB concert!!! Although, I spend most of my work day reading all of the interesting and amusing posts on this site and end up having to work until 8 or 9 to get my minimum billables in. Anyway, I love this site and thought I would seek advice from all of you regarding what I should do, bring and expect for my first show. A group of us are going to the Columbus show on May 22 at OSU. OSU is a great place to tailgate for football games so I am assuming the same will hold true for the parrotheads. But the Buckeye fans don't share that well, what are the rules of ph tailgating (other than common sense), I saw something about BN name tags that get you in to places? In an effort to keep this post short (too late I know) what should I bring to the tailgate besides food and tequilla, are there activities not to be missed? I have no idea what to expect, but I am hoping it will fun especially since I am having my 21st birthday for the 7th time that weekend. First JB concert and another 21st b-day, what more can a girl ask for?

Congratulations, I wish I had started catching JB concerts when I was 21. You are obviously wise beyond your years!

I can tell you that most venues are very restrictive as to what you can bring. For example, Riverbend in Cinci won't even let you bring a towel or blanket to the lawn. Obviously no beverages allowed passed the gates although I usually smuggle in little bottles of rum, tequilla, etc. You should be fine in parking lot though.

They usually say no cameras but bring a disposable camera to get some PH photos. They won't usually mind a disposable and the worst they'll do is take it from you. Bring all the beach balls you want. Come prepared to be somewhat crowded but everyone else (for the most part) is there to have a great time. It's a unique atmosphere for a concert because of the bonds that parrotheads share.

Lastly, come dressed for the occasion and remember, it's all for the love of Jimmy!
Hope this helps
you can't lay on the beach and drink rum all day if you don't start in the morning 8)

Hey, congrats, I started to see JB when I was 17 (I am 25 now), Columbus will be my 6th Concert, first indoors. Things you need to bring, tequila, rum, beer, and something to mix the hard stuff with. I highly recommend a grill with some cheeseburgers (lettuce, tomato, Heinz 57 would be nice too!) and something else to munch on. When drinking for 6 hours you get kinda hungry. Bring some party favors too, maybe some beads or flamingo straws or a beer bong. Make sure you are dressed appropriately; grass skirts and coconut shells seem to be favored. Get a good nights sleep the night before if you wanna be the last (wo)man standing. Arrive early, the Schott parking lot has no gates and is free to park, so I would assume you will start to see the first phlocks rolling in around 2, with the majority at 4. Just have fun, a JB show is fantastic, everyone is so friendly and just wants to have a good time. Bring enough food and drink for your neighbors, cause they will be doing the same for you. Remember, it is better to have some let over for the after show party then to run short during the pre show party! And come find me, I will be the one with the shark fin on top of my silver Honda Element, should be getting to the lot around 2. Phins UP!

Thanks for all your posts so far. My fear is that I am going to intake so much tequila that I will pass out and miss the show! I am going to do my best to pace myself. Does anoyone have any good punch mixes? Not sure when the last JB concert on OSU campus was, but does anyone know if the vendors that are at the OSU games will set up shop? Will there be food and drink for sale or should it be all self supplied? Is the Holiday Inn lot going to have a "Buffettgate" like Heinegate? Will they close Lane Ave down, or is this going to more limited to the Schott lot? Also, has anyone had trouble with camera phones at concerts? Sorry for all the questions, just curious as to what scale this is going to be on. I have seen pitures of other JB tailgates where people bring sand and volleyball nets and baby pools. I am willing to go all out on this one and appreciate any suggestions. Oh, and to clear the record (which I would rather keep blury but in the sprit of full disclosure) I am celebrating my 21st b-day for the 7th year in a row- I not growing older or up- I refuse both- so 21 it will be for the foreseeable future. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

No, they will not be closing down lane ave. for the concert, and there will not be any vendors. It will be nothing like an OSU game. Think of going to the biggest backyard BBQ you have ever been too, mix it with some tequilla, Corona, Lime and some feathers and mix it up in a really big parking lot and you have a JB tailgate. Lots of people bring baby pools or fill there truck up with sand. But, don't think this will be anything like an OSU tailgate, it is far from it and tons more fun.

More fun than an OSU tailgate?! I am definately looking forward to this. So I gather this will be more or less confined to the Schott lot. But, isn't that usually reserved parking? I actully can't remember how big the lot it is either. Well, either way I will be there early to investigate. Thanks again for the info. At least if we run out of alcohol, there is always the 7-11 on Lane for refills. Does anyone know where to buy a battery operated blender? I know they make them, I just don't know where they sell them.

You're going to be kicking yourself the next morning if you drink too much and can't recall more than three songs you heard. Even if you're not a huge phan of bubba's music, you will be after one show. I suggest that you get to the tailgate early, get a buzz going, have fun, but stop drinking about an hour before the show starts. Wolf down some food, and plenty of water. Don't be tempted to buy any drinks inside until intermission.

My first show was in 2002(FSOTW tour) and I don't remember ANY songs performed off that album, which is one of my favorites. Just pace youself, and have a good time!

Nope, not married. I have managed to avoid that prison so far (to my parents disdain). Plus, I am a lawyer and most men are afraid of me. Something about never being able to win an argument. 8) Anyway, got a bit off track- so sharing is the motto. Sounds good. If you're there I'll definately have a drink for you.

Not sure I agree with the stopping drinking an hour before the show. That is when I like to hit my peak. No I do not recall every moment about each of the shows I have been too, actually, I am lucky to remember half, but that is what CD's are for. That night is for having a phantastic time. But don't blow your load early and get sick, remember, it isn't he who gets drunk fastest, but he who sustains his buzz the longest (and eats the most cheeseburgers and shrimp)!

That's why I don't have kids! No brief checking here- unless you mean a legal brief- and I am sick of checking those.

How do you make that little guy? That's one of the best one's I have seen! I want to use that in my work. All I would do in answers to complaints would be to put that guy and sign my name.

Another question- I have seats to get rid of which I am beginning to worry about having to eat. They are not the best seats in the world, but not terrible either- do think I will be able to get rid of them there w/o taking much of a hit?
