Not sure Jimmy is your typical artist that NEEDS to go on tour to promote an album. We'll buy it whether he tours or not, and he only features a few cuts (tracks) anyway. He has to have a name for the tour, so he just picks up on the latest release, if there is one, or calls it something random, if there isn't. Can't recall Jimmy ever saying "Please buy my new CD!"Mplsfins wrote:Anyone else think that with the late release of the album Jimmy just might tour longer this year? Perhaps into the fall? Would make sense to me to keep the promotion of the new disc out there being that there is only 8 shows after Alpine to promote it. I noticed that Chicago is the first concert in August. Could there possibly be another go at Alpine as a warm up to Chicago? Not starting anything but a sure sellout of 40,000 tickets wouldn't make it too hard on my pocketbook if I was Jimmy.
Anyone have any News on the Album Release?

It will be a co-release of Mailboat and RCA Nashville.
RCA Nashville is basically just for extended distribution and to service the record to radio.
For those of you who don't know how radio works, in order to get a song on, say, 1000 ClearChannel stations you have to pay an "independent record promoter" an obscene sum of money. The independent record promoter then goes out and schmoozes the stations to get the record played, usually by offering things the station it wants, like all-expense paid trips (paid for by the label) or a guarantee that they'll get the next (insert big star) single first.
Yes it's payola, just with a middle man. Welcome to the record biz. Wait until you hear about organized crime and record distribution....
With Mailboat, Jimmy doesn't use independent radio promoters because, frankly, Parrotheads will buy the record whether it gets heard on the radio or not. Who needs radio when you have the coconut telegraph.
My guess is that for Jimmy to give up a piece of the pie, RCA must have promised a lot of radio and promo support and not asked much in return. Maybe they hope to sell a couple million extra albums to the country folks.

My guess is this is what is really causing the delay on the album. Its been in the can for a while and they're just trying to figure out who's getting paid what to buy off who.
Too bad. It really saddens me that Jimmy has opted to go back to the major labels even if its just for distribution.
Here's a couple of links to help you understand why this is just plain wrong.

"That's possibly a fairly long answer, but just the highlights of the RIAA's practices involve price-fixing, blaming its poor financial state on unfounded digital piracy claims (and in turn, blaming and suing its own consumers), lobbying for changes that hinder technological innovation and change copyright laws, underpaying the artists it represents, invading personal privacy to enforce copyrights, and dismantling entire computer networks just because of their ability (of their users) to share copyrighted files. (Feel free to visit the RIAA and Boycott-RIAA.com to learn more!)"

"Though it would appear that record companies are still making their money and that artists are still getting rich, these impressions are mere fallacies."

We all know that the record industry sucks, but I think Jimmy deserves a chance to have a big hit single again. The guy had one chorus in an Alan Jackson song and you would have thought he wrote the whole thing by himself when he accepted the Grammy. He just wants to give it one last shot at being an American Superstar, he will always have his cult following, but let him try get a hit single that is released by Jimmy Buffett and not Alan Jackson or some other star. I think it is great that he is going to give it a shot, let all those bandwagoneers jump on with us for a while. Hell, I am not selfish, I will share Bubba.
Now that we think we have a good release date, how long before the release of the album do they usually release a single, atleast a month right?

Oooh... just found this thread! Fun!
Whoever it was that started talking about marketing is right on the money. At a label like RCA (and sister labels Arista & BNA) they have folks like Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Diamond Rio, Alan Jackson, it's an embarrassment of riches. They can't be marketing - and schmoozing radio - to get everyone on the air and on the store shelves and in the newspaper reviews all at once. They have to spread things out over time. They, quite honestly, could care less whether Jimmy is touring and what he calls his tour. He just has to fit in to the equation.
It seemed like they totally dropped the ball with the whole LTC / Sports Illustrated tie in, but apparently that was because the Kenny / Cracker single was on the horizon. Kenny and Cracker are touring together, and the label probably provided tour support for that one. They've got a lot of their eggs in the KC basket right now. They're making him a star and themselves rich. They had to wait until that single peaked before putting a similar "Kenny with a non-country artist playing music that people will be drinking pina coladas on the beach to" song out. And with AJ - also in their stable - doing the Dallas shows - and whatever other dates may be on the horizon - this single makes sense.
The single is cool, y'all will be the first to know when I get my hands on the full album!
