I suggest you start by posting this question as a thread under the Changes in Lattitude Discussion area. You'll probably get more/better responses there.

Connie, I hate to say, but Van Morrison isn't dead.ph4ever wrote:ashaway1 wrote:schoolgirlheart, i would like to disagree with you, look at influential rock music of the past 40 years, the beatles, james brown, led zeppelin, the rolling stones, hendrix. janis joplin, eric clapton, crosby stills nash and young, the doors, aerosmith, bob dylan, the majority of these bands all used drugs as an enchancement for their song writing and recording, you think we would have sgt peppers if the beatles never took acid?
you are correct in the fact that all those musicians took drugs back the - KEY POINT HERE TOOK. Let's see Beatles broke up and don't play together, James Brown cleaned up and sober, Led Zeppelin hasn't played together since John Bonham died, Rolling Stones - they may partake still but I know they don't perform stoned. Hendrix - dead, Joplin - dead, Eric Clapton - performs sober, Crosby Stills Nas and Young - well we all know what happened to Crosby in Texas, The Doors - Van Morrison - dead. Aerosmith - Steven Tyler has been clean for several years now and his performance is much better now than when he was stoned.
And what you are saying regarding your perception that these bands used drugs as an enhancement to their recording and writing HOGWASH - the ability was there to begin with. At the time drug use was a very common thing in the country among young people. What the drug use did was make recording a very trying task, many of the writers faced problems with their writing because of their drug addiction and obviously several gifted musicians died because of drug addiction. How many groups now are affected and unable to perform because of a member's addiction problems. I'm sorry someone tweeking and paranoid on coke dosn't write good songs and neither does someone nodding on heroin. Yes a lot of writers are addicts and that has been the case throughout time however how much better would their material have been if they had been straight?? Plus not to mention we'd still have some of them around if they had not been addicts.
Your argument has no merit - especially to those of us raised during the sex drugs and rock and roll attitudes of the 60's and 70's and know better.

You will think I'm being picky but James Brown was recently (January '04) arrested for charges of domestic abuse (again). That doesn't mean he was drinking or on drugs but judging from his mug shot, I'm not sure I'd wager money on it.ph4ever wrote:you are correct in the fact that all those musicians took drugs back the - KEY POINT HERE TOOK. Led Zeppelin have performed together at least three times since John Bonham died. The first time was at Live Aid with the late Tony Thompson (Chic, The Power Station) and Phil Collins on drums. The second time was for the 40th Anniversary of Atlantic Records with Bonham's son Jason on drums. They also regrouped to play at Jason's wedding several years ago.

I can't speak for the rest of the Stones but Ron Wood has had some well publicized battles with the bottle in recent years and is supposedly now sober. I say supposedly because he apparently exhibited some rather erratic behavior at a recent art exhibit for some of his paintings.
As far as drug use in the entertainment field, it's nothing new but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. I think it's up to each of our own personal perceptions as far as that goes. Some people such as Rimbuad, Kerouac, and Edgar Allen Poe supposedly did some of their best work while under the influence of various intoxicants but they also suffered from it in the end.

Yes Jahfin I do think you're being picky and argumentative. For every musician you can name that is on drugs someone else could point out someone who sobered up. Does that mean all musicians are on drugs - I don't think so.
Ashway was stating that the majority of musicians are stoned in one way shape or form when they perform. What you have done is read and picked on one comment I made - kinda like people who quote the bible to serve their one purpose. And in this case your purpose appears to be just to continue an argument.

I have had my share of alcohol at shows. But one thing I have always said is that Parrotheads are the most laid back by far of any bunch. I have been to many shows in many states and venues. You don't see fights in the parking lots and shows like you do at some other concerts or sporting events. There are a few exceptions but for the most part it is all about Phun, phriends and phellowship. PHINS UP!!!!
"At a moment like this, I can't help but wonder...what would Jimmy Buffett do?"
I wasn't attempting to be argumentative, I just mentioned those artists because some of the things you were saying about them aren't entirely true (you had to at least enjoy the mug shot of James Brownph4ever wrote:Yes Jahfin I do think you're being picky and argumentative.
