Congrats on graduating from law school!!
It's a great accomplishment. Law school was the best 3 years of my life.
Currently I work for a big firm in NYC, which isn't that exciting but allows me to pay extravagant ticket prices to buffett concerts. MY dream jobs are either (1) working for Jimmy himself (as far as I'm concerned, those trademark infringement cases are a good thing - heightens his need for good lawyers!) or (2) working in the USVI - there are a couple of federal judges there I'd love to clerk for or even just work for a small firm.
My advice to you - go to martindale.com and do a search on firms in Key West. Then start making calls, sending resumes. I did this search and came up with 59 firms. These will tend to be very small and might not have great need for associates, but you never know.

I left KW because I could not find work...and my father is in tight in town, too.
Here is a little story about trying to be a lawyer in KW. My buddy was a former ADA in Miami and moved back to Pittsburgh last year. His friend was recently appointed one of the lead ADA's in KW and immediately offered him a job. He called me to ask if he could survive on a prosecutor's salary in KW (mid $40s).
So I call my dad, and immediately get a "Hell, No." Apparently, a POS efficiency in town is $800, and something liveable is $1500. To make things work, he would have to live no closer than Big Pine and commute to KW (not that its a bad commute....I did it for years).
Regardless, it is a tough market. To break in, you really need to know someone. Or, if you can swing it, hang a shingle across from the courthouse. Areas of expertise imp't for town are criminal, real estate and environmental.

Cleveland?!? Give the poor guy a break...why would he want to go to Cleveland?phlisa wrote:Oh, no you don't. That's my job. Ok, my dream job.zigiwami wrote:I am graduating law school this May and would love to work for a fellow Parrothead in or around the Keys...any offers!
"Having fun is just smiling through those Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes..."My cousin lives in Key West and is a lawyer for the county (ie) all of the Keys. Therefore he does a lot of traveling. I spent 2 spring breaks while in law school and the week after I took the bar and the week after my boyfriend took the bar in Key West. It is my dream to work down there. Unfortunately, I don't think there are many law firms in Key West- you can of course hang up a shingle and try not to starve to death. The only other option is Miami and then visit KW as much as possible- but I would never do it. If you have any luck let me know- I would be there in a second if I could. For now, I am stuck at a good size law firm in Cleveland trying to stay off BN so that I don't get fired and can afford to pay my mortgage. Luckily my house overlooks Lake Erie- but it is a far cry from the Gulf and the Atlantic. If you decide that Cleveland is a good alternative- let me know- I know how fun it is to look for a job.
What firm are you at?

I know- Cleveland is not Kew West- but it is better than other places. The weather sucks though- it was actaully snowing yesterday. At least when it is snowing outside there is no urge to get out an throw away precious billable hours. Then again you can throw them away posting on BN all day!ColdWaterConch wrote:Cleveland?!? It was such an obvious choice, I completely overlooked it. Pittsburgh better than Cleveland- let me see we have a nice big lake- but you do have 3 ditry rivers- you have hockey but now we have LaBron James- and then there are all those hills and tunnels and detours in Pittsburgh- yep Pittsburgh is way better.ColdWaterConch wrote:phlisa, I was razzing you b/c he would surely pick Pittsburgh over Cleveland....and yeah, it was snowing here yesterday as well. Kinda sucks.

There are tons of lawyers in Ft. Lauderdale and its just as close to KW as Miami with less hassle and certainly warmer than Cincy or Pitts
