You have to remember ..Jo Pa isn't just Penn State Football....He is PENN STATE...they were nothing before him...I'm not talking about football..I mean the school.....He built the library for them.....So that's why he deserves the deal he is getting

Sorry I've been AWOL - Work has been getting in the way of my personal life again - I hate when that happens.

JO PA - I try to make it to Happy Valley each fall for at least one game. Last year it was BC. I am still amazed at Paterno's youth on the sideline. He sprints (and I don't mean jogs - I mean SPRINTS) onto the field. A friend of mine officiated the BC game - Head Linesman and was on Paterno's side of the field. After the game, Paterno sprinted over to him and grabbed his arm - Now - as you might remember from the previous year, this got Jo Pa into a bit of trouble after the Iowa game by grabbing an official in dismay about the officiating. My friend had one of those "uh-oh" moments until Jo Pa smiled and said, "You did a good job." My point is simply this - I don't think he's ready to be done yet. My brother lives in State College and word around town is that Paterno has listened too much to his assistants who have gotten him to stray from what he's wanted to do. Seems he may have let out too much line. HOWEVER - the one complaint is that he still doesn't like to play underclassmen even if they're better than upperclassmen. It will be fun to see what happens.

IRISH - There's one in every crowd. I don't care if they're in a conference or not - Just get 'em off TV when they're lousy and they pre-empt better games. I enjoyed my trip to Ann Arbor last year and getting to watch the Irish get pasted. T - shirts were clever on both sides. "Rudy su**s, Irish swallow" and "Ann Arbor is a wh*re". Good stuff

VT Uni's - Haven't seen them yet - need to go on line. Will get to see them stripped off when the equipment manager does his portion of the camp at Beamer's Ladies Clinic on July 17. Last year it was KJ and D. Hall. Nice Under Armour!!

Good to be back - Just 98 days until kick-off at Fed Ex Field.....

You know who NBC showed on Saturdays befor the ND deal....nobody....so actually you are getting a chance to see more college football games because of it....

FOOTBALL SEASON - NORTH VS SOUTH

I love SEC football.....but based on your comparisons I'm guessing you haven't been to Michigan (110,000 +) ND, OSU, Wisconsin or Penn State (also 100,000 +)......make a road trip to one of these places on Gamed Day...worth the ride

They need to make up their minds and be in a conference just like every other team....and stop stealing bowl games away from other conferences...If they are in the BIG EAST or whatever and they earn the bowl, then great...but Im tired of them getting the bowl just because they are IRISH. They used to be great, but their are lots of more dominent powerhouses...and I would no longer consider Notre Dame one of them.[/quote]

Don't forget....Bowl Games are event put on by local Chambers of Commerce...to MAKE MONEY........they don't care about records...they care about tickets and which school is going to bring the most fans....Northwestern was in a 3-way tie for the Big Ten title and ended up going to th Alamo Bowl (#4 OR 5 SLOT) because the other bowls passed on them....they don't travel well.....happens every year.....

You know, I think this comparision should be more a East Coast/West Coast thing, than a North vs South.

For the Georgia/Florida game, we get on the road on Wed and start our tailgating late Wed night when we get into FL.

Is it August yet????

As a season ticket holder I applaud the University for giving him an extension. Joe Paterno has earned the right to call it quits when he is ready. rain or shine, win or lose, the games sell out, the fans tailgate for 3 days and PSU is making millions. When Joe does decide to leave, it will not only hurt the University, but also the sport of College Football. There will never be another Joe Paterno. Academics ranks very hi on his priority list. He is not just a football coach, he is much more to many of us. I just wish that he could live long enough to coach my 3 year old when he enrolls at State College. The recruiting class this year was awesome...why? Because these kids want a chance to learn from the best. What did Anthony Morelli say about his switch from Pitt to PSU? He thought that Joe would be at PSU longer than Harris at Pitt!

Sorry about rambling here, but I am a true Blue fan, a die hard Joe supporter. Have a nice day!

Georgia/Florida one game I watch on TV every year but never had the pleasure of going to, though one of my buddies that lived there while he was in the navy got free tickets every year he was there. 1000 miles driving is a long way for one game even if its free

I wish it was August, heck I would rather it be Sept 18, 2004 8pm Neyland Stadium Section R Row 21 seats 21 and 22 The Vols beat the Gators on national TV 52-0 :D Ok i will be nice to Gator fans 52-2 stupid punter couldn't hold on to the ball in the end zone

Was so tired tonight that I swore I was just going to see what everybody was chatting about and told myself NOT to sign in - HOWEVER - here I am, college football freak that I am.

OK - I DO think there's something to what you're saying and I do think this comparison was targeted more toward the true NORTH - MD, NJ, NY, CT, MA etc. - In that regard, it fits.

Penn St is the true exception. The others listed - ND, OSU, Wisc - that's mid-western, not Northern.

I've been to PSU and I've been to Ann Arbor (vs. Notre Dame) and I had a blast and it was fun - but it WASN'T the same!

I was sitting here trying to think of how to verbalize what it is that is different and I don't think it's any one thing. I have found there's more Southern Hospitality at games in the South and while there is definitely "stuff" flying back and forth between fans, it's a kinder, gentler hostility (WVU being the exception there! :D )

For example, I was at a game at Texas A&M, cheering for the opposition and the man in front of me (who had been totally obnoxious) left and came back with an Italian Ice for me saying he'd wanted me to be an a**h*** but we were really pretty fun, etc. etc. - I went to an FSU game alone and ended up with my choice of about 3 tailgates to crash by the end of the night. I go to a PSU game every year and while you might get a hello or two, there's not the spirit and sense of welcome and I'm cheering for the home team!!! Same was true at Michigan. I'm married to a Yankee (actually, he's considered a Damn Yankee because he came here and stayed) - Anyway, he's always chuckling when we head up to a Rutgers game because I'll just chat away like I'm down at a Georgia Tech game. People think your nuts!

As for the atmosphere, there were great tailgates, food, etc. at my PSU and Mich games but not the same aura of hospitality.

Just an aside, but I think Southern College bands are also less rigid and old school and are more "Show bands" or fun bands.

I love the comparisons and I love going to all of it. I fear I've not really been able to verbalize what I feel when I go to the different places. Of course, we all prefer what is familiar.

And, as for Game Day, I'll take Lane Stadium, night game, Blacksburg, VA any day - so will Kirk Herbstreit!! :P

I'm done - goodnight

Speaking of a night game at Blacksburg, does anyone remember
the lightning hitting Lee "not so fast my friends" Corso's car while he was broadcasting?
That was some storm. Too bad the game was postponed as I was so ready to see VT smash GT.

I was at that VT-GT game, seated directly underneath the bolt! Didn't see it coming because it was behind us. My friends on the other side of the stadium said you could see it rolling in. Very wild time. They had to open the field to get everyone out of the stadium and I had to exit that way. Ended up crawling through a ticket window and riding out the worst part of the storm with a small group of Hokie faithful in that little building. The new highway was under construction and most people leaving to head back to the Richmond area were caught in mudslide for hours. We sneaked out the back way through Radford....

What a great football memory!! That was (obviously) worse than this year's A&M game during Isabel - piece o' cake!

And as for KH, not bad eye candy but me thinks he doth like himself a little too much! I don't like any man who primps more than I do! :P

The Isabel bowl for us was a blast we met a bunch of A&M folks before the game in the new endzone under the stands who were not prepared for the elements to say the least. I had some extra trash bags in my jacket to keep my legs dry and swapped a hot dog and sprite for 4 trash bags from this family from college station. Not one person I talked to at the game the entire night complained about the weather except for the fact it was a lot colder than they anticipated it to be. I missed the Lightning game but my father and sister in law said it took a week for their shoes to dry out lol

No Lightning Games for me. But I did sit through a 0-0 tie Civil War game in the sleet and freezing rain. Not your normal weather for a game in Eugene.

Here, it is heat stroke we have to worry about.

And, FYI, some of us are up at 7:30 a.m. to watch Kirk (and the boys).

Nothing beats a day here in virginia in july and august where the temp is 95 and the humidity is right there to match it at 95%. I start a sweat the 30 seconds it takes for me to get to my car and unlock it. By the time i get to work and walk from the parking lot to the building i feel like i need a shower :D

I will trade your dry 112 day for our 95 temp 95 humidity any day of the week

I'm wih you, Alan.....we don't have a "comfortable" temperature for a home game in Clemson util well into Oct.....sometimes Nov. I think last year's Clemson/UGA game on Aug. 31 was the worst--game started at noon and it must have been 100 degrees. Sitting there for three+ hours with no shade--I felt like I was going to vomit after a while. Though that might also have been because of the way Clemson was getting beat (we lost 30-0).

One of our players did throw up during that game--our center puked right on the ball right before he snapped it. Imagine the shock of the QB when he got that in his hands... :o

The worst game heat wise i ever remember going to was Michael Vick's first collegiate game against JMU in 1998 I believe. It was a noon kickoff and the temp was only supposed to be in the low 70's cloudy and breezy. It is cool the entire morning before the game so I wear jeans. It mists rain all the way up until kickoff and then the sun comes out and it gets hot in a hurry. We are at the very top of the student section at lane and its an adventure in intself just getting there with no shade. I felt like i was going to pass out, thank god tech was up like a billion to nothing at half and we left or I was going to die.

For the cold unless it is icy or snowing I can set out in that all game long and have a blast, a thermal weather proof columbia parka dosen't hurt either

Blacksburg has such funky weather you can never be fully prepared for a game. The syracuse game last year it was pouring down rain in Roanoke and freezing so we have our rain gear and jackets with us, drive the 40 minutes from our house to blacksburg whole other story, sunny and in the 60's not a cloud in the sky. That has worked against us too over the past couple of years where it was nice here and a blizzard up there.

No thank you. I was in New Orleans this weekend with 92 and 85% humidity. I'll take my 110 and 7% here anyday.

Non-college, but funny anyway... Last September the Green Bay Packers came to play the Cardinals -- it was 106 at game time. All the Cheeseheads were melting and the headline in the paper the next day was "Cardinals Win Quesadilla Bowl." I've never seen more white people turn red, pass out, faint, throw up, cry, whine, etc. But by September, 106 is a nice cool day for us.

You know, even though I can't wait till the end of August and that first college kick off, I hate those HOT HUMID days. How is a woman's hair and makeup suppose to stay fresh in that sauna?? The best part of our season will be in Oct...a cool fall breeze PLUS the best part of our schedule: LSU and UT at home, (are you ready Alan, can we make it 4 in a row?) which leads up the the Florida/Georgia game which is ALWAYS the CBS 3:30pm game of the week and the best damn road trip of the season!

We lost a great quarterback and a lot of seniors and there are still questions about certain positions, last time this happened 1997-98. Manning graduated, Tee Martin took over as qb and the Vols went undefeated and won the National Championship.

Last year I really thought was our year and then the 41-14 prime time massacare you put on us. I am going to guess with the Vols schedule they will finish up 10-1 or 9-2 with the loss or losses being against Georgia and or Auburn.

Don't worry about Florida we will take care of them for you on Sept 18 at 8 pm on CBS Is it obvious I am excited about going to my first Florida game
