A Buffett-like Chesney

Okay, so I've seen the postings over the last month or so about how people are unhappy about Kenny Chesney "trying to be like Jimmy." Well, my wife and I were at the Greenville, SC Kenny Chesney show last night, and I'm happy to report a few things.

First, let me say, being a huge Parrothead, I seriously thought about going in FULL Parrothead attire, but decided against it as the show was a surprise b-day gift for my wife and she would have thought something was up. Now, the details.

1) Boat Drinks, Volcano played over the loudspeakers while people were piling into the arena.
2) As seen here before, Jimmy welcomed everyone to the tour on the big screen when the lights went down and ihe did a great job.
3) When Kenny Chesney was lowered from the ceiling singing the opening song, I looked up at the stage and had to do a double take on the big screen. He was wearing a "Captain Tony's Key West" t-shirt. Played the whole show in it!
4) Kenny played a nice version of "Cheeseburger." Didn't do anything different like change words or anything, but played it just the way it was meant to be played.
5) When Kenny sang "I Wanna Know How Forever Feels".....when he got to the part where he mentioned Jimmy, All 3 big screens flashed full images of the album art from Havana Daydreamin'.

Throughout the show there were a bunch of images of Kenny on his boat and at his house/around town on the island of St. John.

I don't think Kenny is trying to be like Jimmy, I think he's trying to establish himself as a different sort of country star. And hey, let's face it, stars admire other stars and I think Kenny looks up to Jimmy. I suggest that if he comes to a town near you and you have a chance to go, it's quite a high energy fun filled show. Sure, it's no Jimmy, but then again, it's not supposed to be.

Yeah. . . What he said!

I went to see Kenny a month or so ago. . it was great, high energy, lots of fun, I'll go see him any chance I can get!

PS. . Yes, I'm a Parrothead. . thru and thru. . I go to 2 or 3 around the midwest ever summer and own ever album he has ever put out. . It's amazing I have to post this kind of disclaimer now. . however reading some of your posts the last few months i feel like it's needed for my own credibility

I have to agree... I saw Kenny a few weeks back when he played in Worcester.. Great show.. then again, I've also been a fan of Kenny since he first came out so I enjoy his music regardless..

If the guy was playing a show in my back yard, the only reason I would go out there would be to throw a rock at the copycat wannbe!!!!

Chesney sucks!!

I agree with what y'all said (minus the one dissenter...)! I saw his show in Mass, and it was a high energy, well done show. I certainly felt I got my money's worth!! The only difference from botdrk's description and the show I saw was that for the Mass show, Kenny was wearing a Hog's Breath T-shirt instead of a Captain Tony's T-shirt. :D

This is what i think this.. We all know Jimmy is not going to be around for ever.. which sucks but thats how it goes. What are all of the parrotheads going to do? Kenny is the answer. He is young and he is shifting to the stlye we all love. I went to the Penn State show and it was amazing. I have been to other concerts and my friends hate me b/c I always say how the Buffett concert is so much better at this and at that. There were not to many things that were worse at his concert. I like the idea how he is becoming like Jimmy! That gives us more reasons to go to concerts and show the world how to party and enjoy good music. Buffett-Chesney 2006 US TOUR!

Nothing more than my humble opinion, but I think Kenny is a lot like what Jimmy MIGHT have been if the country world had embraced Jimmy all those years ago.

Now, that having been said, Kenny is NOT a carbon copy of Jimmy. Similar styles, yes, but different enough that I feel like I've seen two different (wonderful) shows by two different artists.

I am really looking forward to Kenny's St. Louis show. I liked Chesney before his shift to island country, and I like him after it.

I also saw Kenny at PSU. I thought he put on a great show. No one will ever take the place of Buffett, but seeing Kenny was like a warm-up of a great time to come in Camden this summer!! :P :P

Yup! I still prefer Jimmy, but like Kenny. It's kinda like this: My favorite ice cream is usually Ben & Jerry's PHISH Food. But if someone offers me Cherries Garcia, I'm sure not going to turn it down!! :D

I have seen Kenny twice and own a few of his cd's. He is no Jimmy but then again who is. Kenny can get the crowd into from the start of the show to the end, esp. when he get the big orange balls out during how forever feels. He looks up to jimmy just like all of us do. I say let him enjoy the fun, drinks and most important the WEATHER!! :D

And he's just like Jimmy in that he doesn't play Knoxville. Well, that is unless he's practically giving away tickets to try and beat George Strait's concert attendance record. Nebbermind the fact that he's *from* 15-20 minutes north of the Knoxville area. :-?

Back where I come from? Uh huh. I mean, he's playing Allentown, PA and Portland, ME, but not *anywhere* in East Tennessee?

That said, I enjoyed his concert in Ft. Myers a couple of years ago. I didn't go to the big one they filmed/recorded last year here in Knoxville though b/c I had *no* desire to stand in the rain all day.

I'm disappointed. An artist should establish themselves as who they and not 'ride of the coat-tails' of an already established artist.

Now I have no problem with tribute bands but when you get to a certain level like Chesney, I think it's pretty cheesy... :-?

Chesney had already established himself as a country star and sold over 10 million albums long before these latest "Buffettesque" releases. So I think it's inaccurate to accuse him of "riding the coattails" of Buffett.

Why is it so hard to believe that Chesney could actually be a Parrothead and is playing that kind of music because he likes it?

"...he has already estblished himself"

precisely my point. :o

Okay so when I go to a RUSH concert next month I'm going to expect Geddy Lee to be dressed like Gene Simmons// RUSH will play a KISS song// When the RUSH fans arrive a few KISS songs will be on the loud speakers// and while they are playing a RUSH tune, the video screens will show album art of KISS// Oh, and b4 the RUSH concert, Paul Stanley and Ace Freely will come on the screen to welcome everyone to the RUSH concert...

Sorry, I don't agree with you. :pirate:

My wife and I saw KC last Friday night here in Jacksonville with no idea what to expect. He put on a good show, it was high energy, and he didn't mess up any of the words to the songs.
Comparisons aside, bottom line, we had a fun night out and that was what we were looking for.
Here is where it was mosy UNLIKE a Buffett show, with the predominently female audience, the no line for the Mens room was quite a change. :D

Someone metioned 'Back where I come from' earlier, did you know that was written by Mac??

Hey, quite alright. Different strokes . . .
If only all disagreements on this board could be so congenial. :D

Looks like some people are taking the idea and words completely out of context.

Everyone else, I'm a little sorry I brought this topic up in the first place. Didn't think I'd see so many whiners and complainers. All I was saying is that Kenny Chesney's show was good and I wanted to say "hey, Jimmy's involved."

Now everyone is a freakin' music critic. To all of you who think he's riding Jimmy's coattails....think of this.

JIMMY FREAKIN' APPEARED VIA VIDEO. It's not like they tricked him into doing it. He obviously likes what Kenny Chesney has done and likes his ideas or he wouldn't have done the intro. If we all claim to be supporters of Jimmy's music, and Jimmy thinks the Chesney thing is alright, then why don't we support it. Good enough for JB, good enough for me.

Look at that....you try to give a few recollections that you think Parrotheads might enjoy and people take offense. Unless you've actually seen the Kenny Chesney Tour this year, I'm not sure you can really critique it. And I'm sure that p*** off and offends a few more of you.

Anyway....see you in the parking lots this summer!

*Gosh I hate long posts*
