Jack Johnson.....
Has anyone heard his cover of "Pirate Looks at 40"? Not bad I thought but of course it's not close to Jimmy's version. Wondering what others think of it or I guess even if they know who jack Johnson is.

I'm not sure how old his version is but I don't think it's brand new either. Jack Johnson is an ex-surfer from Hawaii who's music I saw described as "lazy blues stylings, which also molded folk and hip-hop for a modern rock twist". That's a prety good way to put it I think.
If you want to hear it, check out archive.org. A few of the Jack Johnson shows have Pirate Looks at 40 in them. One such show is http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-deta ... hp?id=5150

Jack Johnson is awesome!!! Caught him in Columbus last year and I have several boots from the above mentioned archive.org (among others).
His cover of APLA40 can be found on the soundtrack to Jack Johnson's movie "The September Sessions."
Johnson, for those of you who don't know, is an ex-surfer (as mentioned above), who now makes surfing documentaries and, obviously, music. He is friends with, and ofter tours with, Ben Harper.
Johnson also appears on Donavon Frankenreiter's new album - an album he also produced. Its a great disc and I think many Parrotheads will enjoy Donavon, too.
As for Jack Johnson, you can't go wrong with either of his solo releases - the debut Brushfire Fairytales or last summer's On And On.
Peace.

I have a few parrothead friends who tell me that Jack Johnson is the next generations Buffett. I am not so sure of that myself. Personally, I have heard some of his music, but not all of it and I am not that impressed. However, some music really takes time to grow on a person and I probably haven't give Jack a fair shot. I'm not sure that there is a Buffett of the next generation. But if there is, I would much rather give that title to Johnson than someone like Kenny Chesney. Another artist that you may want to check out is Brent Burns. He's not great, but has a couple of catchy tunes that you can hear at brentburns.com. One is titled "Livin the life that Jimmy Buffett wrote about". He is a parrothead and means no insult to JB with the song, but some fans still take offense. "Down in Paradise" (video) and "Livin in Limbo" are worth checking out as well on his website. As for Johnson, I'll give him a closer listen sometime.

Funny you shoudl mention that Jack Johnson may be the next generations' Jimmy cause I was introduced to Jack Johnson's version of "Pirate" and him in general by my little bro who's 10 years younger than me. He likes Jack like I like Jimmy. Jack Johnson is playing Central Park in Septemeber and since I work across the street from there, may try to check him out.

I too saw him at ACL Festival. He had the crowd!!! I thought he was pretty amazing. I caught only part of it too. Seems like I was trying to catch some of Tift Merritt or Caitlin Cary performance.Jahfin wrote:I caught part of his set at the Austin City Limits Music Festival last year. From what little I heard, his music didn't do much for me but from the interviews I've read and seen with him in recent years he seems like a nice fella, his music just isn't my cup of chowder.
ACL Musicfest is music overload, but so energizing!!!
