Job Chance in Margaritaville turned down....
Well I think it is pretty much a done deal that I didn't get a management job in Margaritaville, Myrtle Beach. After such a long drawn out process that started in mid-February, it is safe to say that I didn't get the job.
To anyone that cares to read this, here is the story. Back in Feb. I sent my resume and cover letter to the man in charge of hiring for Myrtle Beach's upcoming Margaritaville [Wesly Smith]. I thought being a retail manager would be perfect for a big Buffett fan (me) to start out at after graduation from college (this past May 8th).
Well...turns out I met the man at the Myrtle Beach job fair in March. We talked for a while and enjoyed some laughs...and he said he would definately get back with me. Now comes the beginning of April, and I actually got a call from Mr. Smith for a phone interview. Well, I had the interview and then he said he would call me in a few weeks no matter what. Guess what fellow parotheads...he NEVER called!!! My guess is I cracked up in the interview or something and he didn't like me. I seriously dont know where I went wrong...I have all the qualifications PLUS more. I don't know...maybe it just wasn't my shot. I really really wanted to work at this Margaritaville, and I thought I was definately in. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Sunset Beach is my Margaritaville. Where there is endless beach, no time, and sunshine that seems to last forever. I know that Someday I Will.....Someday.

Follow up with a letter saying thank you for the interview, be specific about some key points. Wait a few days and call him. Follow up until you get a definitive no. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, don't let it fall by the wayside without doing anything. You asked for advice and that's mine.
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win
But the authorities insist on my leaving
Take care my American friend

I have rarely seen a new restaurant, or even a store, where the opening manager was there more than a few weeks. The opening personel seem to leave quickly at most places. stay in touch with the man and maybe you will still get a shot. also if he offers an asst. mgr job, take it and just wait..................
Looks like you live near by. if you do. Make sure they see you often and Keep checking in.
I agree that this is a once in a lifetime chance for a ph, keep trying And good luck

Agreed. And whatever you do? TRY not to take it personally. There are so many people out there wanting EXACTLY what you want. Too many to choose from.... all just as qualified.Four Play wrote:Follow up with a letter saying thank you for the interview, be specific about some key points. Wait a few days and call him. If the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, you better make sure they aren't waiting for you to manage Margaritaville Key West.Tiki Bar wrote:Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no, and it ain't over now!!!!![]()

and also, you may need to start a little lower in the ladder - you mentioned just graduating - maybe it might be easier to get in the door at a lower level then work toward being the retail manager.

Understand that it's not likely they'll move someone into that position with no experience. But also remember that persistence, drive, attitude, and strong work ethic will go a long way. Stick with it and take any opportunity you can to get your foot in the door. Once you do, you'll get your chance to prove yourself. Best of luck to you. That sounds like the kind of j*b that someone could love.
you can't lay on the beach and drink rum all day if you don't start in the morning

I'm not sure everybody picked up on your Animal House "Germans bombed Pearl Harbor" but it wasn't lost on everyone. Great line.

As a fairly recent college grad myself, I know how tough it is to land jobs like this. With the economy the way it is and the shift towards people looking for new jobs frequently, it is hard for someone with little experience to get a shot (I'm assuming as a future grad, you're experience managing is probably relatively little compared to others who may have applied). I got a Textile degree and went to work in a plant here in NC. As everyone knows, Textiles really has taken a beating and I was layed off a year later. It was nearly impossible to find work with 1 year of managerial experience. Common response: We have others applying who have 10+ years of experience. I went back to school and will have a business degree in about 6 weeks. Then I'll be out trying again. My only advice is to keep at it. If this is the job you want, keep trying. Something will come along.

Don't ever give up on a job that you want!!!
The job I have now was originally given to another applicant; and I received the proverbial "Thank you for interviewing, but we have decided to hire someone else" letter . . .
Three weeks after being hired, the "other applicant" wore out his welcome and I got the "Are you still interested in this job" phone call!
Two years later, I've still got the job and the letter is framed on my wall as a conversation piece!!

I couldn't agree more... you are submitting a resume against seasoned veterans in your field... perhaps shoot for being on the opening team that travels across the country setting up all the stores... those positions are usually given to single people with no ties... and a great opportunity to meet all the upper level management.creeky wrote: wPs!

just my 2 cents...
