Ok, this is dumb question, but please bear with me. What is the trick to properly crushing ice in a blender? I either end up with a bunch of big "cubes", or it's completely liquified. Also, how do you figure the correct ice/booze ratio for a frozen drink? Thanks.

We don't have those up here. I was just using regular ice cubes made in my freezer. Do I need to use smaller ones? If so, do they sell freezer trays to make them?

What I like to do is not make the ice the first thing you add to the blender.
Start with your aclohol add your mix, top it off with ice

then I'd but those cubes into something- like a plastic bag and then POUND the crap outta the big cubes to make them smaller. Said pounding may also be therapeutic

If it turns to liquid you aren't using enough ice.

Because the ice is "softer" it will be more slushy and mix smoothly in the blender as opposed to homemade ice which tends to freeze harder and ends up crunchy in the drinks.

Buy a high speed / high quality blender. RPM's are the key to break up the ice

Here's what I found did the trick. It was a very wise investment at only 39.99........

this is gonna sound like I'm starting stuff, but two things
go to a bar and order a Blended drink and watch a pro
follow their steps. most Bartenders I have watched
pour the ice in first and than add late if more is needed.
just a thought.
oh the other thing??? enjoy the mistakes and try try again!!!

Has anybody bought one of those gas powered blenders they are selling on the Coconut telegraph?

I don't have the funding for a gas-powered blender, but I did see a hand-crank blender at REI the other day for $69.

I was looking at these, and did a bit of research. I read about 20 consumer reviews, and not one was favorable. Leaks, poor construction, difficult to clean, etc.
