There are certainly a lot of sharks off the Carolina coast. A great white could take a huge bite -- no doubt, but you're more likely to be seriously hurt (or killed) by one of the smaller species. Bull sharks keep biting until they're not hungry any more.

About a million years ago, East Coast surfers would sometimes wear a rope bracelet (natural fibers only, please -- cotton or hemp) and they said it kept the sharks away. I dunno if that is true, but it probably works better than a pork chop strapped to each ankle.

right, chances are you more likely to be bitten by a tiger shark or something. I think this story is something Id rather had not found out about. Although I know Great Whites are not as dangerous as most fear, I just cant help thinking of JAWS. I saw that when I was young and it has scared me ever since.

It wont stop me from going to OBX of course, but you can bet that will be on my mind at least once when I step into the ocean.

When they were surfing a MILLION YEARS AGO (give or take), what did they use for surfboards? Mastadon tusks? Now my imagination is going "Bedrock," thinking about all the latest in caveman fashion surfwear.

I'm not gonna worry about it while I'm BoogieBoarding in a couple of weeks at Sandbridge Beach.

If it's my time, it's my time. At least I'd be part of the food chain. :pirate:
