Glimpse inside the Coconut Telegraph

I just went on a cruise to the little latitudes. While I was on a tour on the island of Dominica, the tour guide was saying that up until a few years ago the banks of the river we were passing would be full of women. They would take their laundry to the river and stay there from 6 AM - 6 PM. Then she said, the funny thing was, in that 12 hours they would only do 2 loads of laundry. The rest of the time was spent spreading gossip. While this was going on the men were at the docks "fishing". After all day down there they would bring back 2-3 fish and have to go back the next day.
10 hours a day of gossip coming out of the islands. The Coconut Telegraph.
Sadly, she said the ritual has stopped. Been replaced by cell phones and email. It's a shame, really. Perhaps the Coconut Telegraph is gone.
