Hundreds of budding tri-state actors won't likely know until July 25 if they made the final cut of what promises to be one of the summer's hottest movies, "Seabiscuit."
That's when the movie is scheduled to open, starring Spiderman's Tobey Maguire as jockey Red Pollard and Jeff Bridges as the horse's owner Charles Howard. The movie is directed by Gary Ross.

Hundreds of local extras were used for some key scenes shot in the Lexington area over several days last November. The Keeneland track was dressed up to be Maryland's Pimlico Racecourse in 1938 and is the setting for one of the movie's most dramatic moments -- the match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral.

Other scenes were shot at Calumet Farms and in Paris, Ky.

While Seabiscuit was Kentucky born he had no real ties to the area, coming to fame as a California-based colt. In fact, there is no record he ever raced at a Kentucky track, although he raced at Cincinnati's River Downs.

Producers considered using that track for the scene, but rejected it because Coney Island in the background would ruin the period shots.

Meanwhile, it appears one of those extras used was musician Jimmy Buffett. He plays a reporter in a scene shot outside of a Paris hospital (which was supposed to be New York City, 1939). Fred Anderson, a Cincinnati public relations consultant, was also playing a reporter in the scene.
"At the last minute they brought in this guy as a reporter and put him right next to me," Anderson said. "I kept looking at him and thinking, 'Gosh, he looks familiar.' But I couldn't quite place him. After we did one take we took a break and a crew member came up to me and said, 'That's Jimmy Buffett.'"

In talking to Buffett, Anderson learned he is a friend of director Ross. Anderson figures he has a good chance of his scene staying in, since he was positioned next to Buffett. "If they cut him, they cut me," Anderson said.
