I emailed Radio Margaritaville the other day regarding live cd's for this tour. The reply was not very informative, but it did give me a slight glimmer of hope. This is the reply:

We don't have any information on that at this time. I imagine they will be made available at some point, but, I can't say for sure.

I remember last year when the tour dates first came out, Cincinnati was not one of the cities on the list. I e-mailed Riverbend, and I could not believe the way that they completely ignored my question.

Here is what I said:

Today, Jimmy Buffett released a whole batch of tour dates that covers most of the summer, and Riverbend was not one of the tour stops on the list. Is a Jimmy Buffett tour date at Riverbend still pending, or will Jimmy Buffett not be appearing at Riverbend this year? Thank you very much for your time.

Their reply:

I have no information yet. As soon as I get any information, I will update the website. You may subscribe to our mailing list to receive updates by e-mail.

I came really close to e-mailing him back and saying, "When you say you have no information yet, do you mean that you have no information regarding whether a Jimmy Buffett show at Riverbend is still pending, or do you mean that you have no information yet as to whether Jimmy Buffett will not be appearing at Riverbend this year? :D But, I knew that it probably would get me the same generic response. Of course, about a month later, the date for Riverbend was announced.

a) RM isn't the sole decision maker involved in the release of live CDs, so most likely their ambiguity isn't their fault. They can only tell you what they've been told or what they're allowed to tell you.

b) Same with venues. Sometimes they may know things, but are contractually obligated not to announce before a certain date. Or sometimes the guy answering the email may not be in the loop.

As Key Lime Lee points out, Radio Margaritaville actually has very little to do with the live releases. Mailboat Records has more to do with it. Here's some info from Mailboat (written in February)...

"[Following the Hawaii release], we will then move on to the spring and summer 2004 tour, which starts in Tampa late April. Most likely we will be releasing at least 1 show each week, and possibly 2, mainly depending on how many different songs Jimmy does each night. These will all be available exclusively thru the Mailboat Records web site."

Mailboat Records confirms that what you hear on RM has nothing to do with what you will hear on CD. "The quality of the Radio Margatitaville shows has nothing to do with what we are doing. We have our own equipment now, and the sound and quality will always be perfect, but a live show is a live show, and if Jimmy makes a mistake you will hear it. We are not editing out the content of each show. What you see is what you will get."

Also, just yesterday, I spoke with Mailboat regarding Hawaii release and LTC.

"(The) Hawaii DVD is almost done, and we should be able to ship within 2 weeks."

"'Hey Good Lookin'' and the rest of the new CD (License To Chill) will be available on Apple iTunes on July 13, the official street date."

I should also add, but will defer to Key Lime Lee on this, that Buffett's distribution deal with RCA for the release of License To Chill may be affecting the release of this summer's live releases. I suspect we won't see them until after the July 13 release of LTC. And we'll probably see the releases clustered like last fall's live releases. I can not confirm this - just speculation. And Mailboat wouldn't answer that question either.

Phinhead,

I have emailed Steve at RM several times with questions and usually he will get back to me in a couple of days. I have noticed that he is very helpful with what he knows. Back when Far Side of the World was scheduled to be released every record store said that it would be out on the scheduled day but they did not get it. I emailed Steve that evening to ask about it and he got back to me that same night with the scoop that it was delayed due to the cover art and they were not sure when it would be shipped. I then got an email from him about 2 weeks later saying that a release date was set. I asked him one time about a song that I heard but did not know the title or name. 3 or 4 days later he sent me a list of all the song that were played on that date and around the time that I heard it and I finally figured out what song it was. Even though they may have given you a vague answer it was probably the only answer they knew.

Live CD info

Post by steveatrm »

Chris at RM here. Thanks to whoever made the correction about my gender. Yes, it is true my reply to the question about live cds from this tour was vague. I always try to answer questions from our listeners in the best way I can. Our listeners are very important to us and we do our best to inform or at least give hope. If I am to wordy, it's because I LOVE MY JOB!!! :)
