Are Parrotheads Hedonists?

Post by parrothd_mark5 »

I have heard Parrotheads being called hedonists. I'm not making judgement on the person who said this, but wanted to get the opinon of those on this board. Of course, this is probably talking to the choir, but wanted to just hear what you had to say.

sounds like your ex-friend is very self righteous and judgemental. Someone needs to pull that corn cob out of his/her a$$

Here's the Merriam-Webster definition of HEDONISM:

Main Entry: he·do·nism
Pronunciation: 'hE-d&n-"i-z&m
Function: noun
Etymology: Greek hEdonE pleasure; akin to Greek hEdys sweet -- more at SWEET
1 : the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the sole or chief good in life
2 : a way of life based on or suggesting the principles of hedonism
- he·do·nist /-d&n-ist/ noun
- he·do·nis·tic /"hE-d&n-'is-tik/ adjective
- he·do·nis·ti·cal·ly /-ti-k(&-)lE/ adverb

I don't agree with how your ex-friend is interpreting the definition of the word because that person obviously that word doesn't mean what he/she thinks it means. Sorry to argue semantics here...but I do think pleasure and happiness are the chief good in life.

I search for pleasure and avoid pain. Duh!!!

Your ex-friend is very proud of him/herself that he/she can use a word such as "hedonist". The only crime ex-friend has committed is just being plain STOOOOOPID and not liking Buffett.

That's why she's a "used to be" good friend. I just hope she wasn't good in the sack.

I think that it might be true at the tailgate/concert to a degree, but even if you go to every single show that's only like 30 days per year- I think that as a whole we're a lot more active and responsible than most other groups (considering that the PHIP clubs raised 1.6 million in 2003- and that was just the stuff we did as a group, not the individual stuff). So I guess we're hedonists that are trying to make the world a bit more hedonistic!

The name has always had a negative connotation to me, but after reading the definition I guess it seems to be a good principle to believe in!!!!

"the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the sole or chief good in life"

Who doesn't want a life of pleasure and happiness? Where do I sign up?

I'd say for the most part, parrotheads are quite the opposite of hedonists. Forget for a moment those who go to their one show a year simply to get drunk in the parking lot. There are plenty of those, but I don't count them as "parrotheads" in this example.

I think most parrotheads are very concerned about others and the environment. We just tend to have a positive outlook and the ability to enjoy ourselves (sounds simple, but I think today some people have a hard time relaxing and enjoying themselves). Nothing hedonisitic about that.

I think THIS is where the problem lies. Maybe you should point her in the direction of some of the Parrothead clubs, and let her see all of the charity work that gets done. :P to her!

Even if we do fit the definition of hedonists, so what? I think most, if not all, of us work pretty damn hard for our money. If we use a JB concert as an excuse for an all day party, and don't hurt anyone in the process, there's nothing wrong with that. Pleasure and happiness - sounds good to me.

I've never considered myself a "Parrothead" (more power to ya if that's your thang, it's just never been mine) but some of us live the "lifestyle" year round and don't reserve it just for Jimmy Buffett concerts.

I think (and it hurts when I do) that AQ is somewhat confused as to why you are on a JB board if you're not a parrothead.
