Greetings from Thailand
Howdy!!
I don't know how many people will remember me because it's been a while since my last post. Quite a while. But, I'm here teaching English in Thailand up north in Chiang Rai and had a thought to check in and say hi. You guys are probably all wrapped in Buffett fever right about now with the concert season in full swing. Woohooooo!! Wish I could be there to tailgate with you and enjoy the show. Internet listening is even out of the question since things around here are not quite as up to speed as in the US.
Perhaps my living conditions can give you an indication of what I mean by not quite as up to speed. The side of my house is board and batten wood which works well when it's hot and dry but when it's monsoon season (right now) the rain just comes right in through the walls. Very nice!! Now I'm not trying to complain, quite the opposite actually. This great!! It's kind of like going to camp for the summer. I have several house lizards and one pretty big gecko living with me which keeps the bug and spider population down a bit. Every evening I can wander down the street to the neighborhood night market and buy some fried chicken and sticky rice for dinner and have you ever heard the slogan Thailand, the land of smiles? Well it's completely true. Everyone is extremely friendly and smiling all of the time.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and wish you all a great concert season. Raise a glass for me if you remember. I'll be there in spirit.
Have fun everyone!!!

Howdy!!
Thanks for saying hi! The web blog is a great idea and one which my uncle has spent some time trying to put together for me. He owns the web site that hooked me up with this gig and wants to set up a blog so other people can get a clear picture of what the experience is really like. Unfortunately, internet doesn't always work up here so we haven't been able to get the thing running and my uncle won't be able to help out again for about a month as he is on Denali giving the summit a go. We have a pretty active family actually. My dad, aunt and two family friends are up there as well.
Anyway, I'll do my best to get that together and I'll go ahead and post some updates here until it's ready.
Phjrsaunt, tell me about it. This was a hard choice to make. Go to Thailand for a year and teach english or see Buffett at Nissan. I sure hope I made the right choice and Buffett doesn't go and retire on me or anything. Yikes!!! Scary thought. Say hi to everyone at the tailgate and raise a glass while imagining the Tiki Bar is there. That would be great!!!
I'll keep in touch when I can and will be thinking of all of you having a blast at the concerts.

There's a really easy way to set up a Blog. Go to http://www.blogger.com/start and follow the instructions. That way you don't have to worry about messing with the software. I have an old blog there that hasn't been updated in forever, but it's *really* easy to use.

Enjoy Thailand, it's one of my favorite places in the world.
Do these fine folks a favor and post some pictures of the Golden Triangle. You might get some of them to come visit when they see how beautiful it is!
Try and get down South to the islands, they are wonderful.

Never met you, but you certainly sound like good people and you're engaged in a very noble task.
Since BN P/H's just LOVE to do good things for others, are there any items/supplies we could send to help the students you teach??
I'm sure many of us would be pleased to send you some of the things you probably don't have access to there!! (And some pre-mixed margaritas for you!!)
Let us know, and take care.

Howdy,
Thanks for finding this post and inquiring about my where abouts. Luckily and thankfully, I was not in the south of Thailand when the Tsunami hit. My school is up in Chiang Rai and we were in the middle of a semester so travel was not really an option. It took a little over a week for my friends and I to account for everyone we knew that may have been down there. Thankfully everyone has checked and is doing okay.
One sad part about this whole thing is that I visited the islands back in October and met some really great people that lived down there. I didn't keep in touch with any and have no way of knowing if they survived.
I'll be posting more information about it on my blog if anyone wants to check it out. Right now I'm running off to teach some classes (which are going quite well these days) but I'll write more soon.
Thanks again for asking about me. I really appreciate the concern. Parrottheads really are some of the greatest people on earth.

Great to hear from you! Sure hope all the folks you met in the islands survived the wave. That was an unimaginable tragedy.
Somehow I missed this whole thread when it started. Are you in the area of the Hill Tribes? Several of my bead magazines have had articles regarding the silver bead making trade in that area.
When are you due back in the states?

Amanda:
I'm so glad to read you've survived that tradgedy and are safe.
Rest assured everyone here is keeping their fins crossed for you, and anxiously await for the day when you return to the U.S.
Also-do you have any way of knowing if the area around Satta Hip survived the tsunami? I spent a lot of time there in the 1970's, and it was one of my favorite places I've ever been to.
Stay safe-
Peace & prayers,
Garry
