Freddie and the Fishticks

Post by diamonddan »

I have an old 45 that a friend gave me 20+ years ago. I had always heard that Freddie and the Fishticks was Jimmy Buffett and company. Anybody know if this is correct?

Yes, it is. I have a copy of the 45 somewhere as well. If memory serves, didn't Steve Goodman write "Elvis Imitators"? I'm not sure who's backing Buffett up on the record but I'm guessing it's whoever was in the Coral Reefer Band at the time. I believe he may of also done a gig or two under that moniker over the years if I'm not mistaken.

if I recall correctly before Amy Lee joined the band she was supposed to go play for Jimmy. She was in New Orleans and was being taken to play for him but the band on the marquee was Freddy and the Fishsticks turned out it was actually Jimmy. I believe I read this on her website.

Castro is still playing in Cuba, but the homefield advantage isn't what it used to be.

He played a benefit show out in Aspen, CO on December 29, 1997. The ticket stub I have says Freddie & The Fishsticks. It was a benefit for the Aspen Valley Ski Club & Monteserrat Volcano Relief Fund.

Absolutely crazy show.

The band is also mentioned in Tales from Margaritaville, but I am sure everyone knows that already.

Thanks for posting that, I only briefly glanced through it but I must agree with the part concerning how overblown Buffett's shows have become (flame me if you want, but that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it). I saw him on the Cheap Vacation Tour after Hot Water was released with a stripped down version of the Coral Reefers and it was one of the better shows I'd seen of his at the time. Methinks the Coral Reefer Orchestra and Vaudevillian Revue is a more apt description of what he's got going on these days. That can be fun, but I long to see him at least one more time with just a basic band and no stage theatrics but maybe that's just me.

I know the Margaritaville Orlando show with the whole band was just freaking amazing. If he gives up touring to do that at Margaritaville and CiP a lot, then I think that would almost be cooler than the summer tour.

The way i look at it is... with LESS band, the set list can be ALOT more DIVERSE.

Thanks for bringing that story back to the top. I think it's so hysterical! When I first saw it I printed it out, and every time I run across it I am rolling on the floor. I hope Jimmy has read it and can now get a good laugh!
