MIAMI -- A Hawaiian beach that has gone non-smoking grabbed the top spot in a Florida scientist's annual "best beach" list.
Florida International University researcher Stephen Leatherman says Hanauma Bay on the island of Oahu is number one.
He says the beach's sheer natural beauty and its management practices earned it the top spot.
He expects that non-smoking beaches will become a trend in coming years.
Leatherman says he visits more than 100 beaches every year and uses 50 criteria to rate them.
Florida has 4 of the top 10 beaches -- a tribute to the quality of the sand, sun and water along the Sunshine State's coastline.
Here's the top 10 list:
Hanauma Bay, Hawaii
Fort De Soto Park, Fla.
Ocracoke Island, N.C.
Caladesi Island State Park, Fla.
Main Beach, East Hampston, N.Y.
Hanalei Bay, Hawaii
Crescent Beach, Siesta Key, Fla.
Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.
Cape Florida State Park, Fla.
Coronado Beach, Calif.
