Coral Reefer Band vs. Coral Reefer Orchestra?

Post by cartmill72 »

I noticed in a thread the other day someone referred to the current CRB as the "Coral Reefer Orchestra." With all the horns, singers, dancers, etc., today's Buffett shows are certainly a spectacle when compared to the YHTBT days. So that made me start thinking - which do I prefer? The original, slimmed down Coral Reefer Band or the current Coral Reefer "Orchestra?"

Having seen two of three options listed above in person, I can admit its a tough decision. For the past few days I've listened to a variety of live shows - the "Live In" series from last year, YHTBT, the 1980 radio special that's floating around the net (sharingingthegroove.org) and the East Hampton shows (Jimmy, acoustic guitars and a bit of percussion).

I have to say I prefer the Coral Reefer Orchestra or acoustic Jimmy, despite the fact most of my favorite albums are pre-1980.

As a trumpet player I have to say horns...but acoustic is good also. I like to see him any way he is though!!!!

I like them all, but in different ways. I never could color within the lines.

Coloring within the lines is HIGHLY overrated...but maybe I think that because I don't do it very well, either! 8)

I voted for the horns, my daughter played saxophone in HS and college so I admit to be prejudiced.

I actually agree that I just like Jimmy in all forms.

Doesn't an orchestra HAVE to have strings to be an orchestra?

I think it was meant tongue-in-cheek. But, what is a guitar? ;-)

Just to be clear

orchestra - a musical organization consisting of a group of instrumentalists including string players

string orchestra - an orchestra playing only string instruments

I have to say the CRO just because they're all so nice. Although I would probably pee myself if I got to see a Jimmy and Robert Greenidge show.

I like what Mac McAnally calls today's band:

The Coral Reefer Traveling Circus

Nothing against the CRB--I've met many of them and they are very nice, unbelievable musicians--but I'd take Jimmy with a guitar any day...

It was tough to chose between the Orchestra and the Acoustic but I would take the whole big blown up party any time. I won't turn down an acoustic set as an occasional special treat though.
