Yelp, that's what the Mezcal I had tasted like ...however after reading the bit about roasting the plant over an open fire ......... I'm thinking maybe I otta get me some of ths fancy stuff Rick is talking about and re-evaluate. But I won't be eatin the worm this time.... aphrodisiac or not...though that is a bit tempting.

Mezcal and Tequila come from the exact same plant. The difference is that Mezcal is made by roasting the plant over an open wood fire and the plant is mashed to get the juice. In tequila the plant is boiled then mashed. Same exact juice, same exact plant. The difference is where or how the juice is "aged" at that point or even if it is not pure. For instance, look at a bottle of Jose Cuervo gold. It's a BLEND tequila. Like wine, all tequila's have a different flavor. If you drink MD 20/20 you expect to puke. If you drink gut rot tequila expect the same.
Oh and if you can find this one
http://www.elsenorio.com in the US, it is great. I especially love the Red Bottle.
Can you recommend one that we will find in the states?

Actually I read on their site that you can get it in the states. I will say that Mezcals are a smoky flavor and are best if you DO have a lime to enhance the flavor. Tequila's that are worth a crap should not need a lime.

In fairness, the worms were also said to have aphrodisiac properties, and worms and bugs are sometimes consumed in Mexico as a delicacy. (Supposedly this dates back to the Aztecs.)
Aphrodisiac!?!? You've gotta be sh*tting me! Yeah, nothing like chewing on a few larva to get the soul man all horny

It's a phallic symbol

Tequila does NOT have a worm. When I was on the Rio Grande in 1977, We were doing flaming shots. When that was gone, we started on a bottle of mezcal. I got the last of the bottle with the worm. Agood time must have been had by all. I don't remember much.

I just got a new bottle of Mezcal Anejo, Legenda del Milagro. I haven't tried it yet but will tonight. Will give you my opinion tomorrow.
Ok the moron that wrote the article on this alcohol was just that. MILAGRO is a brand of tequila and it was the silver. Not a bad shooting tequila but it's no Mezcal! and NO worm!

I personally have never swallowed the worm in a shot, however I went to Cancun about 9 years, one of my friends in the group had the goal to do a shot and swallow the worm. We went to numerous bars until we found one that would serve the shot with the worm. Well let's just say the worm did not have time to fully digest before it became free again. Unlucky.
