As I sat here and watched the final funeral for President Reagan and the final sunset before his burial, I was struck by several things. First, Nancy's strength. . .most of us have a difficult time getting through one funeral, muchless several with the eyes and grief of a nation on your shoulders. The strength of his children who learned so much from their father. And, how one individual can have a huge effect on the world.

After the service, my husband and I sat and discussed how President Reagan had effected our lives. I have three poignant memories from elementary school. Yes, I'm but a 'keet on this earth. The first was the announcement over the intercom during first grade that President Reagan had been shot. The second, growing up in lower Alabama, was the announcement that the great Paul "Bear" Bryant had died. The last, my sixth grade year, was the Challenger explosion. Now, President Reagan has touched the face of God and his family can finally rest and grieve in peace away from the eyes of a grieving nation who feels their loss and holds them up to God in thought and prayer.

The Watch

For many years
This shipmate stood the watch

While some of us were in our bunks at night
This shipmate stood the watch

While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch

Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world
This shipmate stood the watch

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch

Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help

Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch

He stood the watch for many years.
He stood the watch so that we, our families and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety,
Each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch

Today we are here to say
"Shipmate... the watch stands relieved

Relieved by those You have trained, guided, and led

Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch..."

"Boatswain..Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore.."

Rest well, Mr. President, until we meet again.

We have the watch.
Carry on as you know they would want you to do. ~~JB, dedication to Tim Russert

what a beautiful ceremony. A beautiful sunset.

Mrs. Reagan is a very composed and strong lady. I admire her strength.

What an incredible, moving ceremony. That sunset was beautiful. His children spoke eloquently. He would have approved of how it was all done.
