Morgantown: Steel Drum Central, July 4 - 12, 2004
For one week in July, Morgantown, West Virginia becomes the center of the steel drum universe as it hosts nearly 100 performers, music educators, students and enthusiasts from all across the world for Dr. Ellie Mannette’s 12th annual “Festival of Steel” workshop. Dr. Mannette is regarded as the “Father of the Modern Steel Drum Instrument” and is currently an Artist in Residence at West Virginia University and CEO of Mannette Steel Drums.
This year’s Festival runs between July 4 – 10th at the Radisson Hotel. We invite you to experience the education, culture, and performance of the last family of musical instruments created in the last 150 years – the steel drums.
Special to this year’s Festival is a kick-off performance by Robert Greenidge (famed pannist for Jimmy Buffet) co-sponsored by the City of Morgantown’s Red, White and Boom 4th of July Celebration 8:30p at the Hazel Ruby Mcquain outdoor Amphitheatre. Greenidge will be the featured performer at the city’s well-attended fireworks event.
Unique to this year’s Festival is the historic unveiling of Dr. Mannette’s latest addition to the family of steel drum instruments – an 85 gallon soprano steel drum instrument. This “super-sized” lead is described by Dr. Mannette as having the widest range of any individual existing instrument in the steel drum family and could develop into the quintessential solo instrument for a steel-drum performer. The formal unveiling will occur at the “Faculty Showcase” ticket event, Thursday July 8th 8p at the the Radisson Hotel.
The week will be filled with a wide variety of activities including master classes, rehearsals and performances that all celebrate the uniqueness of the steel band art form and the contributions of Dr. Ellie Mannette.
The relationship between Dr. Mannette, his company Mannette Steel Drums, West Virginia University and the Morgantown community has developed significantly over the past decade. To mark that growth and the future potential of this multi-faceted relationship, the program at the “Festival of Steel Banquet” July 9th at 6:30p, will include Mayor Ron Justice of the City of Morgantown presenting Dr. Mannette the “Keys to the City of Morgantown” and the Creative Arts Center announcing the establishment of the Ellie Mannette Student Scholarship Fund to help facilitate exchange programs and travel between West Virginia University and the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.
Additionally, the Festival Banquet will be the premiere of the documentary about the life and work of steel drum innovator, Dr. Ellie Mannette, entitled “THE STRADIVARIUS OF STEEL: THE ELLIE MANNETTE STORY”. The movie was produced by Desiree Sampson, an independent videographer from Trinidad & Tobago who is currently pursuing a Master's degree at Ohio University School of Film. Ms. Sampson will be a special guest of the Festival during the week where she will continue to document Dr. Mannette’s life. The documentary will also be shown during a fundraiser for Dorsey’s Knob sponsored by the City of Morgantown’s BOPARC later on this summer.
Ticketed performances during the week include the “FACULTY SHOWCASE” on THURSDAY, JULY 8th, and the “GRAND FINALE” on SATURDAY, JULY 10th, both at the Radisson Hotel at the Waterfront in Morgantown, WV. The Faculty Showcase is a chance for the visiting faculty (Ray Holman, Jeff Narell, Tom Miller, Alan Lightner, and Jim Munzenrider) to present an evening of their original music for the only instrument created in the past 150 years. This night will also be the historic unveiling of Dr. Mannette’s latest addition to the steel-drum family. The Grand Finale, on July 10th, promises to be an amazing event where the Festival of Steel participants, under the direction of the masters of the steel drum, will showcase what they have learned during a week of intensive steel-band training. Experience the magic as a stage filled with steel drums sets the night ablaze.
A special program book commemorating the unveiling of Dr. Mannette’s latest instrument is included in the ticket price of both of these concerts. Also, both concerts will offer VIP ticketing that will include access to the backstage area where patrons will have the opportunity to meet and get an autographed poster (included in VIP ticket price) from the legendary Dr. Ellie Mannette.
