But I want to remind everybody that this sport is what it is because of its longevity, it's effort to be correct and fair and the participants that make it up and the officials that run the races and the race tracks that entertain us and the sponsors that become involved
Anyone think maybe he forgot one important group of people like, I dunno, maybe the FANS?
The fans are no longer the lion's share of the paycheck.....maybe that be the problema, huh???

I don't know the facts on that one. HOWEVER....if the fans don't show, then NASCAR is on the loosing end. Look at all the empty seats @ MIS. And they are running ads for tixs to Daytona in 2 weeks, which is usually already sold out.

OH just found this on www.JAYSKI.com
Overnight TV Ratings Down 11.1%: Fox's broadcast of Sunday's DHL 400 Nextel Cup race from Michigan International Speedway drew an overnight rating of 4.0 and a 10 share from Nielsen Media Research, today's Sports Business Daily reports. The rating represents a drop of 11.1 percent from the 2003 race, which drew a 4.5/11 overnight and a final 5.4/16. This year's race trailed both the third and fourth rounds of the U.S. Open golf championship on NBC in the ratings from the nation's largest television markets.(NASCAR Scene Daily Newsletter)(6-21-2004)

The July race at Daytona RARELY sells out. I can recall ad campaigns for that race in recent years. Between restrictor plates, the fires, the heat, it's a tough sell. I have never been to a race there (I have toured it) but several friends who have say they would rather watch at home. The back stretch is very far away and when the cars are in the pack it's tough to see what's going on.

If you notice, the tracks that have trouble selling out a second date are the big tracks. The smaller tracks with tough racing (Bristol, Dover, Martinsville, Richmond, NHIS) have waiting lists. It'll be interesting to see how long Texas will be able to sell out it's second date.

Part of the drop may be attributed to the USGP, America's only Formula 1 race. This is the first time they ran in June, it was on the same time as Michigan. I know F1 ratings don't compare to NASCAR, but when you consider a competing race on at the same time, and 100,000+ in Indianapolis and not home, he may have had an impact.

Also, was Michigan run on Father's Day last year?

Yes, and it was up against the U.S. Open also that weekend.

Don't get me wrong, Daytona is a great track... but where we were sitting, we could only see turn two... the entire night. And I was a bit shorter when we went. Why that matters: It's at night, so it is not as hot. People can afford the energy it takes to stand because the sun doesn't drain them. So the view really wasn't that great. But my parents meant so well, and it ended up being a great night.

Well I am sure you could come in and get some, but I don't think NASCAR would approve; you have a hard enough time driving as it is.

First lemme say I agree that NASCAR needs to fix some things. I know that I have watched many a race when Bobby Labonte (my driver) or Tony Stewart among others have had a great shot at taking the flag but can't because of these dumb laps under caution to the finish. Ticks me off man. O well, I am sure that I will still continue to watch but the need to fix some stuff.

Watched Speed Channel last night and I think that they are getting closer and closer to implementing 5 green flag laps to finish a race (like other series do)

The fans don't contribute the lions share of the paycheck, but they are the reason for the paychecks. If there are no fans, NASCAR is of no use to sponsors, and without sponsors, there is no $$ and no tv $$...

NASCAR is an entertainment business, just like Jimmy Buffett. If the fans don't show, the show won't go!

idk, I personally don't get very upset over finishes under caution. It is one of those things that really just doesn't bother me. What does bother me: long green flag runs where no side by side racing even happens. I love the excitement! And it also bothers me when Jeff Gordon wins, but that's a whole other thread we could all probably use :P

No, they should get to throw them at Brian France and Mike Helton. :pirate:

I could do without DW lecturing me about proper behavior all the time though.
(long time fan here - I saw elliot qualify that record lap at Talledaga in the 80's) Anyway, I could do w/out "boogity boogity boogity - lets go racin boys" :x OK, the 1st time it was cute but then he HAS to do it now to start every race *throwsup* & crank it up  geeeeez
it started going down hill fast when Richard Petty retired (finally  ) hey, ya gotta love him, it's in the rule book..
Then there's all the 3rd person talk just before boogity boogity time with Larry Mac & DW, "ok, now I'm reachin up & pullin down those straps" ..
Really. I thought you were in the booth????? ""OK crew chief, I'm comin in & gettin me four new tars, cuz I'm a driver 'n I loves those, I can git up on that wheel" hey, get me a beer when you come in, mm'kay, I'll be in the hot tub
ps, Gordon's still a fag not there's anything wrong with that 'cept if I was out there rubbin bumpers I wouldn't want no fag behind me
ok, I'll stop here.....
