I'd start with the older stuff....
L.A. Freeway
Mr. Bojangles
Sangria Wine
Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother
Gypsy Songman
Railroad Lady
Charlie Dunn
Mr. Bojangles
and then keep going until you get to Jerry Jeff Jazz!!

If you can find a copy of A Man Must Carry On, get that to start with. Several reasons - 1. it has many of the songs listed above, 2. it's from about the time period when Jimmy wound up in FL with JJW.
If you can't find that, Great Gonzos is a good start. Either one, you'll be hooked.
If you EVER get a chance to see him live, DO NOT pass it up.
Schedule is here:

I think a good introductoin for a PH would be Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits. Of course a bootleg copy of JJW and JB performing at JJW birthday concert wouldn't be bad either.

I saw him last year at Stephen Talkhouse. I went hoping maybe Jimmy would show up like he did the previous year. After the first song I didn't care if Jimmy showed up or not (he didn't). Jerry Jeff is great! I highly recommend seeing him at least once. (At the end of the show, I bought all his CD titles he had for sale.

Actually, the only

is that I hadn't bought them before! I repeat - he's great!)

I've seen him 3 times in the last year....each time was a different type venue, so each time the shows were different, but all were terrific!!
If he ever comes close to you, don't miss him in concert!
And it is truly a nice, man!

For compilations I'd suggest the previously mentioned Great Gonzos but for a best of that covers songs that came after those included on Great Gonzo's I'd recommend The Ultimate Collection on Hip-O Records. If you want indivdual album recommendations I'd put Viva Terlingua at the top of that list followed by A Good Night For Singin' and then Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits.
