Old Whisky

Post by rednekkPH »

I was recently (10 minutes ago) given a bottle of Canadian Club Whisky. Nothing interesting in itself, but the label advertises the contents as being 6 years old, and the Canadian tax stamp is dated 1969. Being the math whiz that I am, I figure this stuff is at least 40 years old. Should it be as good? better? worse? poisionous?

No floaty stuff, and the paper tax seals over the cork are intact.

If you see sediment it is probably not a bad thing. If you see mold on top that is. All liquors and wines will age and have sediment. To a great extent it depends on how it was stored for all those years. However, it may be of more value to you to sell it than drink it. I am sure there aren't many of those around from that era.

Being that there is a cork, there is a chance that it could be 'corked' which happens to wine all of the time. Compare it to other whiskeys and see if the color is similer within a couple shades. Definite differences could mean its gone bad.

Also in the package is a bottle of Jack Daniels with a paper tax stamp on the cap. This stamp is not dated. Anyone know how to figure out the date on this one (Need help with dating a bottle    ) The label states it is 90 proof, not the current 80 proof.

they have it date coded and can decipher it for you and tell you if they think it's still good!

Whiskey doesn't "age" after bottling, so it's unlikely that your hooch will taste any better than it did the day it was bottled. Even corked, the alcohol can evaporate out of the bottle. If it looks like it's not filled as full as it should be, there's a good chance it has suffered some evaporation. This may affect the taste (and certainly the buzz.)

All in all, this could be a "keeper" rather than a drinker.

A friend of mine's father gave us a bottle of Hudson Bay 151 rum in 1973 just before we went into the Navy. The bottle was about 40 years old then, It was without a doubt the best Rum I ever had the pleasure of getting too drunk to understand english on. :D

The glass won't age it. Seeing as how its Canadian Club, you probably wouldn't notice any difference.

The problem with this is that whiskeys can change color based on temperature. If a bottle of Jack Daniels is placed in the freezer for an extended amount of time, it will turn a much lighter, cloudy liquid. However, it returns to the normal state when warmed back to ambient temperature.

While less publicized, Jack has made a few different whiskeys over the years each with varying strengths. Green labels, single barrels, specialty decanters, etc. Some of their decanters look like the current bottle, however markings reflect the years they have won the Gold medal (1908, 1932....).

By the way, the standard now is 86 proof (43% alcohol).

Wow, I really sound like an alcoholic.
