If we can't tailgate at Great Woods where's the next best?

Post by stroker »

Unfortunately, Rev. Jimmy moved his shows from Great Woods to Fenway this year and the Official Parrothead Ice Luge Krewe is out of luck! We've been going for 7 years now and need a new home!
How is Bristow Va. as far as Winabagos and tailgating?
Thanks for ya'll's help!

3pm open time?

Post by teamoteo »

It looks like Alpine only allows RVs and other tailgaters in after 3pm...not much time to, um, luge.

What about Nissan in Virginia? I have been there for a few shows but it has always seemed pretty subdued? I wish he were back at Merriweather this summer...

Every year they say that Alpine won't let tailgaters in til 3pm, but they always end up letting everyone in earlier than that when the lines of cars, buses and RVs get to a certain point.

Alpine is definitely the best place to see Jimmy!!!!

After 100+ shows in 15 years from Maui to Boston, I always thought GW was the best venue out East.

My humble opinion, equal to Great Woods on the East Coast, is our very own sensation....Irvine Meadows in Orange County California. Irvine is the West Coast Holy Grail for Parrotheads.

The parking lot, while noted to open at 3 pm, always opens at noon or 1 pm, and is insane.

In years past I brought in my 30" Sea Ray Boat "Island Dancer" for many boat parties right in the lot (alas, boats banned in 1997, and I moved up). Now, it is motorhome Nirvana. I bring in "FINS BUS", my tour bus parked with another 150 or so rigs and you have to see the parking lot party to believe it. Keets parents beware.

Folks...well worth a road trip when Jimmy announces the Fall shows.

Note: San Diego (homebase for me) is quickly becoming a great parking lit venue as well.

Why'd they ban boats?! Somebody drown or something?

Yea, the Ocean laps up to the entrance of the venue!

Actually, I think it had to do with the fact the size got out of control and the number.

The first years I brought in my 30' Sea Ray on the trailer, it was a novelty. For three years, I had the only boat, even though it was massive on a trailer. I had to pay $200 to get it in as it took so many spaces, especially hooked up to my suburban.

Then one day ....10 boats in the lot, next year, banned. Go figure.

Don't think I've seen a 30 footer behind a Suburban before - 3/4 ton I hope :D

No problems in Dallas so far - Starplex/Smirnoff lets you park wherever you want. I'd love to get 10 boats together and park them together like we're rafted up at the lake. Doubt I'll get that many out here though. Most people I know think it's too much trouble, even the little 18 footers.

My ultimate goal is to see a concert on the water from the boat, like the Live By The Bay video. Until then, I'll take the boat to shows whenever I can.

Have boat and trailer, will haul out for concerts 8)

I'm in with the Alpine crowd. I'm from Tampa, and have been to many shows around the state here. I'm looking forward to my trip to GW sometime in the future, but my Alpine trip last year was one of my best ever. The lot opened early and partied hard... I was impressed that no one lost control and everyone seemed to be having a great time! I'm going back to Alpine again this year and will probably work another vacation around that concert sometime in the future. So get your luge out to the mid-west!

My boat was a SeaRay 290 30 feet with a 9' beam...had a wide load permit, and yes, the suburban was a 3/4 ton. The boat made the suburban look like a little Nissan truck.

The funny thing is 10 of my friends who enjoyed the boat in the lot tried to get me to bring my new boat into the San Diego show on the back of an 18 wheel rig. I have a 44" SeaRay, "Lahaina". Alas, they want $2000 and would have had to take the flybridge off...way too much trouble. Instead, we partied on the thing the night before the show.

If you want to see a show by the water, San Diego may be a good road trip. Don Henley is playing in the park next to my Marina next month, and many boaters pull up and watch the show. They have other shows as well, unfortunately Jimmy is now landlocked here for his shows.
