hey guys, im still on tour, but when i found out about darrell russell, i had to find an internet connection to post this. its such a trajedy. me and my dad were eating crawfish only a month ago with darrell. he will be missed dearly
I was watching the race on TV when I saw the wreck...I've seen worse wrecks and seen drivers walk away.....but Darrell didn't.
It has really upset me more than I thought......
I never had the priviledge to meet him, but from what I've read, he was a nice young man and he will be missed.
Always seems to be the less-scary looking wrecks that hurt guys the most. Believe it or not that's more than just anecdotal... the bad looking wrecks tend to disperse a lot of the kinetic energy of the accident. The ones that are less spectacular tend to put more of the force from the accident on the driver.
Compare Earnhardt's fatal crash to any of the other ones he survived...

We had a situation here in the northeast in the mid-80s where a lot of drivers in the NASCAR Modified series were dying (including one of the all-time greats, Richie Evans). The cars never looked that bad after the wrecks - no one could figure out what the hell was going on.
Took them a while to figure out that the problem was they were building the cars so strong that when they crashed, the driver's body was bearing the brunt of the impact. They started building in collapse zones and designing the cars to absorb more of the accident and it made a huge difference.
PS. this is a modified:
