Well Hampton has lots of night life but its a younger crowd. I think Salisbury is just run down and dirty now. How about the Cape? Lots to do there.

I thought about the cape, but both of our funding is pretty low and we don't want to spend an arm and a leg for just two days.. I've been to hampton so many times that I'm all set with the teeny bopper scene for now... Basically that's my last resort...

Goluchester, Rockport or Salem. Salem is pretty cool with all that witch stuff, quite a few bars up there.

that's because you didn't find the Pineapple Inn.....

(I wouldn't suggest it.....)
if you just need a place to sleep, try the Motel Six. It's across the street from the water treatment plant, but it's cheap as Newport goes.
check in Middletown, RI. relatively short cab ride or drive into downtown Newport.
if nightlife is a requirement, you might try the Cape. Craigville beach is great, and Hyannis has nightlife. but hotels rooms are tough there, too....
fact is, anywhere there's nightlife AND a beach, hotels are gonna cost you on a summer weekend....

You might try a little further north: Old Orchard Beach and Ogunquit. Decent beaches with good nightlife within walking distance of most places.
Also check with the Provincetown Chamber of Commerce. I think they offer a service that they know of available rooms in town. There are often cancellations. The neat part is you can take a shuttle boat from Boston and avoid the traffic. Most places will pick you and your luggage up at the dock. The nightlife is just a little "different" than the other beach places, although Ogunquit has a fair number of gay vacationers as well.

But the only beach (that I know of) in Salem is at Winter Island. Haven't been there in years but I wasn't too impressed. Whenever I go to Salisbury these days, I do my actual sunning/swimming at the state park. The rest of that scene IS pretty run down and nasty. I'd go to Gloucester, but I've got no clue about places to stay around there. Wingarsheek beach has always been one of my favorites.
Or, I'd second the vote for Old Orchard Beach in Maine.

Being a native Rhode Islander I'm partial to RI beaches. But I have to agree with School Girl Heart--You'll never find a reasonably priced hotel, near a beach town in the middle of the summer.
If you're into camping, you may want to see if you can get a tent/camper site in Burlingame State park or Fishermans Memorial State Park. Both are near the southern RI beaches and you'll find enough night life near by to keep you happy. I'm not a camper but there may be some private campgrounds down that way too.
Of course Newport on a hot summer Friday or Saturday night is really a lot of fun. Be careful though, some of the tourist places charge a cover charge high enough to make the price scalpers charge for Buffett tickets seem reasonable!!

Hey McGee...my favorite person(fictional

) Have you tried looking in Narragansett for hotels??? I am not sure how much cheaper they are but its worth a shot! We are like 10 minutes away from Newport and if ya want to stop by and say hi I can throw ya some tokens for the bridge!

Not to stray off topic, well....maybe just for a second. Humor me, okay? My Dad always called me McGee.....only it was after the old radio show Fibber, McGee and Molly - not Travis. He died last April, so it always gives me a little warm fuzzy when I see that name.

You could also try Singing Beach in Manchester By The Sea Mass. Also Newburyport beaches I hear there are a few good bars there with an older crowd, well not that old but older than Hampton late 20's-30's

Yeah, that's a good decision. Jones Beach is the important trip.
