Need some book recommendations please....

Post by Tony5150RN »

OK, I've just finished reading A Pirate Looks At Fifty, Tales From Margaritaville (for the second time), and Where is Joe Merchant (for the third time). I love Jimmy's style of writing, his character development and wit. I'm looking for suggestions of what other books I could read while I'm waiting for Bubba's next masterpiece. Any suggestions?

You might enjoy the Alex Rutledge mysteries, by Jimmy's old Key West friend (and photographer and occasional song co-writer) Tom Corcoran: Gumbo Limbo, Mango Opera, Bone Island Mambo and Octopus Alibi. While they don't share the same slightly off-kilter worldview as JB's stuff, they're entertaining, especially with the Key West locales.

Carl Hiaasen's stuff (too many to mention here) might do the trick. It's in a similar vein, but even more over-the-top.

Amazon.com gives a pretty description of both authors' work.

I would highly recommend the Carl Hiaasen Books. They are hilarious and are easy reads. I would also recommend that you read them in order since there are some recurring characters that pop up. Very good summer reads.
The Corcoran’s “Alex Rutledge” books are very good too especially if you have traveled to Key West. Once again, read the first book in the series since they do play somewhat off each other.
The Randy Wayne White “Doc Ford” novels are also very entertaining but not as light as Hiaasen’s or Corcoran’s. As in the cases of the other two read the first in the series. This is even more important in this novel since the base for all the other novel’s is contained in the first one.
I hope this helps some.

I could not get into the Gumbo Limbo abd all of those books, I have read them. However, I love true island tales. David Conover wrote about his time setting up a resort on an island in British Columbia. You can visit the island to this day.

If you liked the Don't Stop th Carnival album, read it. The book gives you a better appreciation for the music.

Don't Stop The Carnival - Herman Wouk - really enjoyed that one and I got it for two bucks on half.com

To Have and Have Not - Hemingway - love this one. I've read it twice and I'll probably read it again in a few months

There's a whole thread in the Off Topic Section on books BNers are reading and what they think of them. It's titled "What are you reading" Hope this helps.

Tim Dorsey, Randy Wayne White, Carl Hiaasen, Tom Corcoran are all good to read.

Lawrence Shames is another good one that nobody mentioned here. 8)
