Hits Daily Double Predicts Possible # 1

From Hits:
Jimmy Buffett may sing about wasting away, but after one day on sale, his latest album is doing anything but.
According to early reports from national accounts, Buffett's License to Chill (Mailboat/RCA Nashville/RLG) should see sales of at least 150k for the week. That means it’s time to break out the margaritas, because Chill has a real shot at #1 against Usher.
Buffett’s apparent breakout marks another big success for RLG’s Joe Galante and Butch Waugh, who are likely to see their third #1 debut in a 12-month period, having already scored top bows for Kenny Chesney in February and Alan Jackson last August.

This is interesting because, according to SoundScan, Lloyd Banks is sitting atop the Billboard 200 with sales of 164,000 this week. That's 62% less sales than it enjoyed during its first week at the top last week, but that's still more than 150,000.

However, if the pre-release frenzy was any indication (#1 at Amazon and top 5 in pre-orders at many other outlets), it probably will debut at #1. I suspect it will sell more than 150,000 copies.

Two interesting points...

1 - There was little competition in the new release field this week (Widespread Panic, TMBG, Dr. John). The biggest contender to sell more than Buffett is The Roots. The trend lately has been for very strong first and second week sales for R&B/Hip Hop acts. So watch for them.
2 - RCA may have held off on releasing LTC to iTunes and Napster driving the fan base to the physical product rather than the digital version - which doesn't count toward album sales figures.

They don't count Itunes and Napster sales? That's not good (or accurate), as lots of people are getting their music useing that method these days. :-?

That's the RIAA for you folks. They don't want you using Kazaa or Limewire. And when you move to iTunes, et al, they still aren't happy. They would make you pay $18.99 for the larger profit margin that lines record execs pockets.

If they don't recognize digital downloads - even legitmate services - then they don't have to realize they are using an out-of-date business model to sell their product.

However, just this past week, the RIAA did create gold and platinum awards for digital downloads to be instituted later this year.

Billboard's chart, based on Nielsen's SoundScan, is released on Wednesdays. So, next Wednesday around 11 am est, check Billboard.com for the answer to the #1 question.

If I'm not mistaken, they count as single sales. That's why some artists are relunctant to sell via digital services. Those, like Dave Matthews, see their albums as works as whole, not singles.

Ya gotta figure that a lot of people buying LTC are not Parrotheads. The country fans will be lining up for this one as well as Parrotheads. IMOHO- I don't like it. We've had Jimmy all to ourselves for all these years...now we gotta share him with the rest of the world.(ok..so maybe I'm greedy) What's next? Cowboy boots and hats in the venue parking lots? (no offense to cowboys or country music fans-but cowboy hats and coconut shell bras just don't go together) No sir... I just don't like it. But congrats Jimmy... I think the rest of the world is finally going to be turned on to your music now.

The charts have historically never been particularly accurate. I suppose if they were TOO accurate it would make it much tougher for the labels to fudge the numbers when it was time to pay royalties.
